A day out ratting

I keep pet rats and take issue to calling the animals 'vermin' and 'dirty' - I personally don't believe in hunting or blood sports and think there are better ways of spending your time.

You keep rats yet you don't see the difference in the ones you keep as a pet and the ones in the wild  They are vermin.

If people want to hunt rats, that's fine. I have no issue with that providing that the animal dies in a humane manner. If you want to shoot it dead then fine, if you want to break its neck meaning instant death then also fine.

These days all animals are killed for meat in a method supposedly meant to be instant and painless. I think allowing a dog to rip any animal limb from limb is awful.

Vermin control is hardly a valid reason, nor is the fact that your dog was bred to do it. My dogs were bred to fight but I wouldn't dream of subjecting them to that fate.

I think the words fun and challenge come into it somewhere. I personally don't think there is any harm in ratting but let's not distort the real reasons why people do it. On occasion it may well be vermin control but more often than not it isn't.

haha

Scuzi, it depends on the particular warren. If it's a one or two holer we just let them get on with it. The lurcher keeps an eye out for bolters if they get past the terriers. For larger places (like the ten holer on the cover crop above) the dogs tend to fan out a bit and wait while the 'finder' digs on.

As for the rest of you... We do it because (1) it's awesome fun for us and the dogs, when we're not out foxing, coursing or shooting. Not to mention (2) it's part of my mate's job on the shoot to keep the rats down around the pheasant pens and feeders.

Chavs? Absolutely not. Why would you think that?

Hare coursing?....

I have no problem with killing animals for food (hunting and shoots) but I do have a problem with killing things for mindless fun and "pest" control. Where was that, it looked like a bit of wasteland and as such I can't see how the rats are causing trouble and so they aren't vermin in my eyes. If on the other hand they are next to a farm and causing trouble with crops then a shotgun would be fine.

Yes, it would be impossible to do nothing that harms an animal in any way, however I always do my best to avoid it where I can and never do it intentionally.

As long as your not doing it intentionally that's ok then. Think of those poor polar bears when you next get in your car. Your knowingly going to kill off those poor bears, but as long as it's not intentional.

;)

Using a car is very different from shooting, or setting dogs on foxes. And I don't have a car ;)

It's dead by then, dogs are other hunters are skilled killers. whilst it's trying to escape it can still gouge your eyes out or inflict damage. Hence why pretty much all hunters kill prey quickly. Usually a bite and applied pressure to a neck..

So don't use silly images of it being torn to death. They are simply eating it there. Unless you want them to eat a rat whole.

exactly a terrier will kill a rat almost instantly with a bit to the back of the neck its just the same as us eating anything except dogs cant use knives and forks :p

In what way is it private? If someone posted warez here the forum owner could be in trouble. That's why they remove it.

warze is against the law, these pictures are not spie can control anything on here within the law, he doesnt allow swearing on here so we are not allowed to swear but he wants to allow these and is totally within his rights to do so.

Bloody great stuff! Must be awesome excercise and loads of fun for the dogs. Although I wouldn't like to imagine half the deseases that get passed on over to the dogs, just don't start kissing them :D

Then again I could never understand and always cringe at people kissing dogs on the mouth after it'd just been licking its balls and bum.
