new 4870 , slow 3dmark 06 scores compared to 8800GT

Hi , I recently upgraded from a 8800Gt to a sapphire 4870 1gb.
I have ran 3d mark 06 as a benchmark and im getting slightly less scores than the 8800 GT.

8800 GT = 9061 score
4870 = 8700 ish score

Tested on both vista and windows 7, same scores.


System specs

Windows vista
e6600 2.4 @2.4 266x9
gigabyte GA-965P-DS4
Geil 2gb 6400 (800mhz ) ram 4-4-12
Sapphire 4870 1gb
Cretive X-fi
Antec NeoPower 550
Ati 9.1 catalyst drivers

I suspected it might be migh PSU, but from a review i read on my PSU it shold be more than cabable .

So ? anyidea's why this could be happaning? shold i return the card? new psu? pls assist.

If the PSU couldn't cope Vista would be forever resetting the hardware and you would know about it so I would think your PSU is good.

What resolution are you running the test at as the newer cards tend to be better at higher res's?

3dmark06 does not give an accurate reading of newer cards on the market like ur 4870. run 3dmark vantage if you want a more accurate result.

althought both of those results do seem very very low for the kit you have.

i got around 15k with my 8800GT.

what cpu u got? clock?

I am no way an expert but i would say for that resolution your CPU @ 2.4ghz is too low.

What have you done to get to 3.0ghz.

Idle's at 65C..that's high for idle.

You've not said what CPU cooler you have or what your case is or what cooling it has.

I would start a thread over at overclocking forum as I've OC that memory before to 1000mhz and the CPU to 3.2ghz on same motherboard with an Arctic Freezer.

for 3dmark, have you checked you are running resolution like for like, also have you changed any of the 3D settings in catalyst control centre ? Check to make sure you dont have anti alias set or something like that and that it is app controlled.

There seem to be a few stories like this, vantage provides a better system performance check with newer cards.
