January Transfer Window Thread - rumours and signings here

Given is City's best signing all Jan, deserves to be at a club with ambition, then again, anything is better than Newcastle :p

I honestly don't care that Given is gone, Harper showed today he is a perfect replacement.

If Given's fee is invested in other players I will be a very happy man.

To be perfectly honest, I'd much rather have Benayoun in the Man Utd squad than Park.

I wouldn't. Park is a massively unsung hero. Defends and attacks in equal measure, plays on either side, is strong on the ball for his side, sneaks in behind defenders with ease (he is the best at this in the entire squad), he's pretty quick, he can come inside or outside.

It's popular to dislike Park, but he really has had some cracking performances for us and he played a major role in us getting to the CL final last year.

I was talking about Park with DannyJo last night and it does annoy me when people just write him off as poor when if anyone sat back and watched they'd see he is a very talented and hard working individual.

Well you should care, he's been your best player since Shearers retirement, arguably longer. Harper is a decent keeper, but he's not in the class that Given was.

On the topic of Given, he was there for 11.5 years, so does he get a testimonial and if so, when?

Benayoun's nearly as frustrating as Garcia was. He's either very good and can change games or he's absolutely shockingly bad. The only real difference with him and Garica is that Garcia saved his performances for the big games.

He's a handy player to have around but not somebody you can rely on.

I disliked Park before it was cool to dislike him. :p I'm just sick of the sight of him, he's too lightweight, gets knocked off the ball constantly, can't cross, doesn't score. Never looks like scoring. He doesn't create anything, and when he does look like he's about to do something special he runs into a defender or thumps the ball into an opposition player while attempting a cross. The only advantage of having him is the freekicks we get when he gets fouled. He's a hardworker alright, but he's not the player we need on the flanks.

Yeah I get the impression he's the type of player to bring on late in the game rather than a starter. Still, I'd take him ahead of Park. Who knows maybe with a good run of games he'd improve. Not that he'll get that under Rafa. ;)

Don't get me wrong, Park's not the ideal first XI starter, but when you need cover for a wing-back, in his case this season, Rafael or Neville, neither of whom are perfect defensively he is a massive, massive asset. He will track back for 90 minutes and make a pest of himself.

Park is a clever player who never gets recognition for the good he does in games, look at the game against Everton for example, he pulled the best two saves from Howard, often drifted past Lescott or Jagielka and also tracked back and helped out against Pienaar who was having Neville's life.

He should score more goals, but he is one of the unluckiest players infront of goal I've seen in a United shirt with the keeper getting the luckiest of knicks on the ball etc..

Let us not forget also, Park isn't naturally a wide man, he's a middle man as he is for Korea, but he is the perfect professional. He'd play a season in goal if you asked him to, never complains about being benched. He was dropped from the squad for the CL final despite playing in every single game leading up to it but he just got on with it as a professional and that's rare in the modern game of spoiled footballers, RVN put himself massively out of favour by sulking because he was on the bench in the Carling Cup final, so imagine how Park must have felt.

Aston Villa are chasing a deadline-day £7m swoop for Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards.

How many defenders do they need to buy this year exactly :p

theres cover, and then theres insanity. When fit they'll have what, Bouma, Laursen, Cuellar, Davies, Knight, Shorey, Young and Reo Coker doing a very decent job at right back. With everyone fit again, and bouma apparently played a couple reserves games now it seems silly to spend so much on backup. You'd think they get rid of knight, maybe already look to offload Shorey as Young's be prefered out of position to Shorey.

But, i can't believe Wenger, he's actually said, on the Arsenal website that he doesn't see the need for anyone need in midfield, saying Song and Diaby have been great and can only get better and that Denilson has been an unsung hero. 15mil, maybe on a completely unnecessary player, while he continues to leave crap players in the squad and refuses to give our very promising players a real chance in the team. After reading that I can only assume the normally very quiet transfers that often pop up out of nowhere for Arsenal won't be happening and certainly won't include anyone we need in any way shape or form.

Reo Coker can do a job at RB, but he's not a good player, Micah Richards can play there naturally.
Also, I think it's quite funny that it appears clubs have now seen how unbelievably average Richards is. I swear 12 months ago only I was saying that on here.

Drunkenmaster, keep faith with Wenger. He is doing what he feels is right for the greater good and having been given what he's offered over the years I'd be inclined to support him. Only 4 years ago Man Utd fans wanted Ferguson out as they believed he had gone mad and I'll admit, it did cross my mind that he had been ridiculous in his decisions, but great managers are great for a reason, they often see what we as outsiders don't and there is no doubt Wenger is a great manager.

Park is a very frustrating player indeed - he gets in good positions and fluffs it completely, he never scores (and its more than bad luck, some of them are nearer the clouds than the crossbar) but give credit where its due, he is a very hard worker and you never hear any complaints from him ( CL final must have been gutting for him)

I still think he is a Fletcher type though, despite their good games they really arent the quality the Utd squad needs, despite their hard work more quality end product is required

Given is a great buy for City - surprised more people wherent interested tbh

Keane is gonna go, with the window shutting at 5/6pm tonight I will be surprised if he is still a Liverpool player tonight - although it will leave a lot of games for Torres to play as there is no 1st team squad striker (a couple of subs as mentioned, but not the quality for starters)

Surprised we haven't seen players flooding into the Man C squad...

Easy to see why.

1)They're a club swamped in "new-money", and Europe's elite (i.e. the players who they're looking for) are mostly already e.g. playing in Europe. There'd be no point in moving mid-season. More action might happen this summer though.

2)As said, they've suddenly got into money, if memory serves correct even Chelsea weren't swamped by the European/world player of the year contenders. A bit of stability and gradual (but albeit quicker) improvements will eventually cause an influx as the appeal playing for Man City might then rise.

3)The players they probably want are going to be the top earners at their club. Bar a few greedy ones, or those that have no choice (does that even apply now?), Man City couldn't really give them a wage which would change their lifestyle.

4)No historical pedigree.

5)Sorry for those that live there, but it is Manchester we're talking about. If you're going to go there, then it's still really about Man U only ( 4)). Or across towards the Mersey at Liverpool. Both clubs with the squad, staff, wages and pedigree to attract players. All 4 are very important.

6)Mark Hughes. Now I really respect the guy. But do you want to start seriously competing every year in the Champion's League / EPL with him? He hasn't any of the right experience, and that means working under him has slightly lost its appeal.

6b)Some might say O'Neil hasn't either. But, the Irishman's been about a lot more, has been involved in league fights etc.

6c)Adding onto that - can Hughes handle an entire squad of prima donna's? Can he keep them happy?
