Why does the UK grind to a halt with a little snow?

A friend from Oslo was reading the BBC UK news page and laughing about the snow causing disruption so he sent me these photo's from Oslo, showing his daily 10 km commute :-)

And this is actually in Oslo - the city - not some backroad :-)

Now I know we're not prepared for the above but you hardly need snow tyres to drive in 3 inches of snow we have atm - in fact it was quite good fun driving in this morning. Although those staying home with 3inches plus I can entirely understand :-) get out there and get some snowman pics up!

I'm not really moaning about everything grinding to a halt - I just wanted an excuse to post a couple of cool pics :-)

Because we get snow so rarely people aren't used to or prepared for it, because it's false economy to own snow tyres etc for the one time in every 4-5 years when they might be useful.

jesus i can understand that but, in the uk its just silly !!! its our weather phobia ! *sigh*

edit: in agreement with Tom0

I agree so much with the OP..

Its funny how most of the UK's Nation is freaking out after afew inches!!! of snow, try living in Canada/America, happens all the time and it doesnt cause no where near as much hastle as this.

Just shows how much of a Joke this country really is!

Yeap this. If it comes regularly and hard enough each year then it can be e.g. budgeted for. Chicago spends around 50% of it's budget for "weather preparation"(??) on the snow alone.

Quite simple really and only a simpleton would fail to realise why.

Personally I don't even own a pair of boots as I would only need them once every 5 - 10 years. It is not like we have bulldozers parked strategically around the country on the off chance that once in a decade we might have more than 5cm of snow.

I bet all the people in Canada/Iceland/Artic laugh at the people in Oslo with their tiny amount of snow

I have a friend in Ohio. She spends an hour every day in winter digging her car out. She cant open windows because a tonne of snow falls in.

Yet here i am, at home instead of the office. Ah well.

Not sure how people cant grasp this to be honest.

It's pretty pathetic the hysteria in the news over a couple of mm of snow if you live in the north of Scotland it can be a way of life in the winter. At my work you don't get a free day off if it snows you have to take it as annual leave.

I don't have snow tyres and neither does 99% of other road users in the UK. So either I will crash all by myself or someone else will crash into me. This alone makes a trip to work on Suffolk back roads a impossibility for me right now.

I'll highlight the bits in bold that answer the question for you.

Yawn.
