Why does the UK grind to a halt with a little snow?

Out of interest... considering ALL london buses are cancelled.. and ALL Trains going in and out of london are also cancelled... how the hell are people getting to work in london?

surely the place must be a ghost town without any workers in it?

let the looting begin?

Come drive me to work :D

Had about 25cm snow on my car this morning, swept that off. Drove to work, snow was about that deep or deeper then I gave up when it started snowing again. Was amused to see gritters out, dont need gritters down here, we need Mr Plough!

I bet they don't even have them anymore!

Only two cars have left our road this morning looks like a lot of people have taken the day off.

And this is what happens to the "heroes" who think they still drive:

I agree with most here whaen they say it's because we're not prepasred for it as it's quite rare. Gritting though doesn't really make any difference with snow, gritting is more for ice. Snow settles on top of the grit/salt so doesn't really make a difference.:)

All this said though, speaking to my dad today he find it difficult to believe that London's buses and the tube have nearly all stopped running. I can understand airports cancelling flights but a lot of it's a bit over the top. He reckoned this is nothing compared to the snow they got when he was a kid back in the 50's. 2 or 3 feet was common nearly every year (and it hung around for weeks as well!) and everybody just got on with it. Still, I suppose it's due to the fact it was a bit more common then that people were more used to it!:D

Well the latest stats say it is the heaviest snow in 18 years in London. Most people now have to travel in to get to work be it driving the buses/trams/trains/tube and 90% of the buses actually start quite outside the centre where the snow is heavier.

I dont particularly get why the tube is being badly affected, unless they're talking about the overground parts...

A lot of it is Overground, despite it being called the 'Underground'.
Not to mention, a lot of it will be due to drivers misplaced or unable to get into work.
