Hi Peeps, just a quick question, i've been slowly buying bits and pieces for my new pc, but no time soon will i be able to afford a "decent" graphics card (maybe next xmas, maybe....)

Anyway this is my new mobo with onboard graphics:

Gigabyte GA-M750SLI-DS4 nForce 750a SLI Socket AM2+ DDR2 Motherboard

Will it be an improvement / decline in quality and gaming playability over my original (ok and laughable) ATI 9700 128mb ????

The new system will also have Phenom 9950 BE 2.6ghz 125w, and also 4Gb (2x2) G.Skill 1066 5-5-5-15 8500.

I just need to know if i am going to be able to play games until i some how manage to scrape enough cash together to get a decent card.

Thanks for your input

Kev

You should be able to play older games and some newer ones at a reduced res.

I think the onboard graphics of the 750a are based on the 8200gpu, if you look around

you may be able to find some benches.

They may be equal in best case scenario.

In theory the newer core has more shading power but lacks everything else. I would guess that the 9700 would be better on average.

My 2nd system has onboard nvidia 7100. It can play half-life 2 @ 1680x1050 with max settings but with 0xAA at about 20-25 FPS (at a guess) I only tried it out of interest.

After being 'tied' down to an AGP slot up untill now it would be criminal not to just go and get the cheapest 2nd hand 8800gt you can find.

you raise an interesting point there mame, In general I would see it as a waste of money, "why buy a cheap graphics card, only to buy a more expensive one later on" but as i wont be able to buy the dearer one for like a year or something anyway - why not.

I might just be able to find like £40/£50 and get a cheap card, it'd be better than the onboard regardless.

Thanks for that

:)

Second hand 8800GT or a 4650 card should do the ticket. The 8800GT is quicker however the 4650 will be new. Will both be a damned sight faster than your 9700Pro (which is still a decent low end card these days, impressive given its age)

I've owned both and it isn't quicker. I only said 8800gt because of the price and because it will still be a huger improvement over on-board

Sorry typo while at work, I meant the 4650. Will amend original post :) 4850 is way out of the price range mentioned and is nippier than the 8800GTX!
