Why does the UK grind to a halt with a little snow?

Seems a lot of the people moaning about this are the ones that got only a sprinkling, here we have over a foot and its still snowing, thats enough to cause problems.

Where do you live?

And no, I don't mind anyone choosing to take an unscheduled day off, provided they don't get paid :)

Pathetic. North Yorkshire has had several inches overnight and its been snowing all day but nothing seems to have changed, very few schools closed, lets carry on like normal! Stupid posh London tw8ts

heheh, north always gets on with things :P we don't let no snow get in the way :D

we have a guy where i work(Ema airport) who`s from norway and he laughs at how we stop with so little snow
this is nothing to them

:) yep.

I think some of us English have no idea how bad it gets elsewhere in Europe compared to here. Our winters are a cakewalk compared to theirs, even our 'bad' ones!

Because as explained hundreds of times in this thread they have this weather often and can justify the expense of an infrastructure to cope with it, and expensive winter tyres on all their cars. Also what city in Norway comes anywhere near London with regards to volume of traffic/commuters? Most people I know are working today, a lot from home though.

I lived in Munich for five years so probably have more experience of living with snow than most people in this thread. Today's weather here would have caused disruption there despite the millions they spend on ploughs, winter tyres etc.

How many cold countries have you lived in out of interest? (No, holidays don't count)

were not prepared for this, i was speaking to a yank this morning, he said how can england come to a stand still in a few inches of snow, i said, over there you have big multithousand pound trucks with shovels on the front to move all your snow, try moving snow with a few bags of salt like us.

Bottom line - Government Fails, fact.

Lived in? None. I don't believe that the weather here in north Essex would have caused any disruption in much of Europe, or many places in North America. Perhaps a few miles south of me it has been significantly worse, I can't swear it hasn't. Based on past experience though, the UK media and SE England goes nuts at the sign of a few ********** or subzero temps in winter.

But day off = win? :)

Tru dat a primary example of how it wastes money is the art centre in West Bromwich which is relatively near to me. Cost millions to build and no one uses it, its arguably even more useless than the milenium dome.

Well I can only go on what I've seen here today and what I've actually seen myself in a city which expects weeks of snow every year. There would have been less disruption of course but there still would have been disruption. Are you expecting all Brits to go out and buy expensive winter tyres on the off chance there might be snow then? Because that would make the biggest difference in my experience.

Why have schools closed in my area, and no doubt many people skived off work, even though the roads are perfectly driveable with normal tyres?

People don't seem to realize that they endanger themselves and the lives of other people by attemping to drive in such conditions without the proper training and tyres. Stop being such stupid idiots and stay inside.

I just drove 50 miles home in 15 minutes longer than normal. Luton to cambridge. The roads are clear. Loads of snow by the sides and luton airport is closed but next to nothing once you hit the main roads.

Workshy ****s.

;)

Maybe not everyone who works around there lives in the area? We got an email today telling us not to come in if needed and that Police were stopping cars and telling people to go home if they could it was that bad around here.
