who uses windows defender in vista?

I always disable it. Never been keen on it. I use other software , spybot and malwarebytes anti malware

i like the software option, good to keep an eye on what software loads at startup, as apple products always re add themselves with each upgrade. i know msconfig does this but handy. would like to know how to turn real time scanning off though?

I turn it off, oh and on my laptop for some reason the 'real time scanning' was hogging resources like crazy.

You do know that real time scanning can be turned off without turning off windows defender in Windows Defender Tools Option.

And a list of options which security agents you want to run or disable.

I personally leave it on default.

Actually i don't leave it on default.
I as ask it to Notify me of Changes made to my computer by software that is permitted to run. Which slides up a little notification window from the task bar.

In your opinion then, running routinely as a full blown administrator which means every process and program has free access to everything on the system is a good thing and the right way to go about things?

I think UAC is useful in the following three scenarios:-

1) The user has limited computer knowledge.

2) The user potentially installs corrupt software.

3) The user visits questionable web sites.

If none of those apply and the system is otherwise adequately defended then there is no reason to use UAC.

A friend/friends comes around your house, is/are on your pc, you go to the toilet, you come back..Game Over.

That happened to a friend of mine on the 2nd day after i delivered the custom build to him.

there are some really cool sites about why uac is there and to be honest i think i could be safe without it, but like i said you get used to it, it's gonna stay it's in windows 7 all be it tweaked and tonned down.
