Enta becoming a joke?

Thats been happening the past year + i been on it, the torrents don't bother me as i don't use them besides i would only touch 10 meg on adsl2 and tbh anything like that would feel slow compared to what i get now.

Torrent would not really concern me tbh. It's the phorm.

Does the weekend count as off peak? I'm suffering slow down right now, despite the fact I run the 2MB unlimited package from ADSL24. It's been happening the last 2 weeks. TBF the majority of this week up until yesterday hadn't been a problem, I hadn't noticed anything, but last week was abysmal. It's werid because I get random spikes of speed for a few minutes then back down to about half mt line speed.

Is this going to be a permanent thing, or is this due to them setting up this new whatever? If it's permanent I'll defo switch, but there is no LLU here yet, and they seem to be the truly unlimited services. Does the regular O2 service come unbutchered? Or Sky? Any other recommendations, as there is no cable here either.

Lets face it the new network that enta have is getting better week by week until they establish network leveles ect so its going to only get better from here.

The concept of peak and off peak hours will no longer exist. Instead there will be a single charging period and a separate period during which we will not charge for usage. For Family connections the charging period will be Mon-Fri 08:00 to Midnight. For Business connections the charging period will be Mon-Fri 08:00 to 20:00. Hours outside of the charging period include the whole weekend.
Capacity Management Policy
A new policy will apply to capacity management with effect of the launch of these new products.

The ALT will give priority to connections based upon two factors. Firstly connections will be prioritised according to charging period and then according to product family with Business products having higher priority. This means that customers with a Business product will have priority Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 20:00 and customers with a Family product will have priority Monday to Friday from 20:00 to midnight.

The major change to the new capacity management system is that customers who consistently use a lot more capacity than others such as to cause capacity problems and customers in respect of who Enta receive multiple complaints of network abuse will be given a lower priority by the ALT. Enta will provide a mechanism for customers and resellers to see if their connection is being subjected to such controls and details on what the customer needs to change in order to have these controls removed.

The new policy will still be operated through the existing ALT system but will operate on a per connection basis rather than in general across the whole of an interconnect node.
The interconnects will be monitored on a 24/7 basis and the top bandwidth users per day will be flagged on our systems (the actual percentage of high bandwidth users will vary from interconnect to interconnect). If a user is marked as ‘high bandwidth user’ 5 times within a 14 day period, then an alternative set of rules will apply to this individual user’s connection when the ALT is in operation.

The high bandwidth user’s speeds will be reduced as per the standard rules of the ALT however speeds will be reduced at intervals of 700Kbps as opposed to 500Kbps. To remove a ‘high bandwidth user’ marking the customer must remain out of the top percentage of high bandwidth users on their interconnect for 14 consecutive days. We will ensure that information regarding the status of any account is made available to our Partners and end users.

The ALT changes only affect usage within the midnight-8am and weekend 'free' period. Any peak usage does not count to any "heavy user" classification. Basically the planned changes will improve the speeds for everyone else because the top few % of heavy users cause everyone who hardly uses any or medium users to suffer poor speeds and that is not fair for all.

EDIT: Beaten to it....

I suppose it could have been a lot worse - weekends are still off peak unlike the first, aborted, change. Everyone's opinions on the ALT changes will be dependent on how it affects them as individuals but it'll be interesting to see how things pan out.

I wish they would define what is considered a ‘high bandwidth user’. At least with an allowance you knew a limit, now wait for the ALT to cripple you. It seem obvious that they've already been throttling some users with the ALT, the whole way this has been handled is very poor imo.

Agreed, in the old days Enta's approach was refreshingly transparent - you had a limit and there was capacity based bandwidth control. You knew that things would slow down at busy times and accepted that it was the same for everyone.

Now we have a situation which is much less clear. There is a promise that you'll be able to know if your a "heavy user" but no way of knowing a) what a "heavy user" is defined as or more importantly b) how much you can download but still have the heavy user flag removed.

I have to give enta credit where credit is due, their support is leaps and bounds above any other ISP. I called up to have interleaving switched off on the 26th, the guy who I was speaking to told me that my snr was unusually high, I used to be able to get the full 8mb speeds up until around september last year. I was only getting around 4/5mb after this point, I thought it was just my exchange and never really bothered. Low and behold I have my 8mb speeds back again, I'm not really bothered by their new changes as it won't really effect me as much, my days of heavy downloading are long gone. Electricity prices in NI are ridiculous, it's costing a fortune to run my pc 24x7.

i rember when they first made the announcment a few months back and whe i called my resellers they simply replied the products hadnt changed in nearly 4 years so not a bad change so far. I think i will be staying.

Support may have been good at one point, I don't think I could claim that now. Last three emails have been ignored. Ticket open for 10 days no response. They suck, the implementation to IPStream was a cracker. The ALT murdering speeds is almost funny. The days of Enta's no throttling, good speeds, no bull, looks over.

High bandwidth customer == top 5%

Seriously that's a joke.

Maybe it's no longer economically viable to run their network like that?

I'm looking forward to all the download merchants clearing off to O2 - more bandwidth for the rest of us ;) :D

Poor service costs them money in the long term. Its their own fault, I'm not a heavy user, more a medium I would say. Never been near an allowance limit, but if you advertise a 300Gb+ product someone is going to use it. I think they should have reduced the caps and let a tailored ALT deal with latency. But above all, they should have told us what the hell they were doing instead of all these nasty surprises and poor service. I could list them out and its a long list of late, but I can't be asked with them anymore tbh. They've lost any respect they had with me.

I take my hat off to thought this new model through. Someone is always going to be in the top 5%, even as they scare off the uber heavy users. It goes round a few cycles until they've skimmed off all the unwanted customers and all they have left are a bunch of ALT terrified customers competing to be the lightest users and costing nothing in bandwidth. Well done.
