Worth buying Vista 64 now

I've been using XP ever since it came out and always avoided Vista because of the bad press I kept reading about it.

Recently though I got hold of a 64 bit Vista disc and installed it to try. I was pleasantly surprised at how quick it was and didn't have any issues with drivers or compatibility.

With the Windows 7 beta release last month, that got very good press. I've read now that Windows 7 may even become available to buy as early as this year. Obviously that's just speculation and no one really knows exactly when it's gonna be available.

So really i'm wondering is it worth buying Vista now considering Windows 7 doesn't seem that far off.

What do you reckon?

I expect W7 to be released this year, so if I were you I'd wait.

And Vista was always good.

Agreed. Wait. Windows 7 is due out soon and XP will certainly do you until then.

Not agreed however that Vista was always good. SP1 fixed a lot of issues. When it first came out, Vista was ridiculously slow; lots of people's hardware had trouble running it; and it took a lot of getting used to (not it's fault I know). XP did run much faster (infact xp sp3 outdoes vista sp1 on occasion) so it was in the large majority of people's interest to stick with xp. Since sp1 however, Vista has improved drasticly and other programmers are getting used to coding for it so there are far less problems now.

Get vista.

In pessamistic ms mood, W7 will probably take a while to get good so theres no point in jumping on the i hate vista and want this new shiny thing bandwaggon. (i like vista now)

I'd never recommend being an early adopter with any MS!!
I'd go to Vista now, and wait until W7 is a little established before jumping.

Just about to build my system and I currcently have no OS. I have to get Vista 64 due to ram. I do like the look of it from what I've seen so far. I'm getting Vista but it doesnt come with sp1. Will it be ok installing it? Or is it better to get it with sp1 than install it without and download it after?

A few different opinions so far, but thanks :)

If I were to stick with XP until Windows 7 came out, I wouldn't buy Windows 7 immediately... there are undoubtedly gonna be a few issues with it at first and I personally would like to wait a while for it to become established as a good OS with good compatibility for current programs/games and driver support etc.

I'm beginning to think that getting Vista now while it's well established would be good for me. It will be supported by MS for a long time after Windows 7 is released, so I wouldn't have to rush out to get Windows 7. Also how much longer are MS gonna be supporting XP, does anyone know?

Hmm decisions decisions :)

From what I've read on the internet , W7 and Vista SP2 are the same thing, give or take.

So you might as well go Vista SP2 :)

The only downside with Vista x64 is IE x64, Adobe STILL hasn't got a flash plugin for it, man talk about behind the times.

Java VM doesn't have 64bit version either for IE x64 , at least you get IE32bit as well

May / June this year I beleive, so you only got a few months of XP support left!

Run the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer then it really doesn't make much difference.

Windows 7 is great but there are a few problems with it. I'd say it wouldn't be released until 2010 at the least. There will also be an upgrade path from Windows Vista to 7.

I prefer to run the x64 version of IE and if a site doesn't work, well then I leave.

x64 is not a new concept win XP has an x64 version, it's about time Adobe / Sun caught up wouldn't you say?

Anyway, I like not having to run those pesky flash driven sites, but that's just me, YMMV

WRONG. Vista 64, uses ie 32bit by default, but you can use ie 64bit if you want. I have never used the 64bit of ie and I have vista 64.

I've just gone from XP to Vista Ultimate 64 bit and find it to be fantastic. Lots of little things that make it so much better than XP. Plus it was only £40 so a real bargin.
I just got a samsung NC10 which runs winXP and i am already feeling tempted to stick Vista on it (32 bit ).

I would buy Vista now as its all updated and pretty stable.
Think you will be waiting sometime for release of Windows 7.

Well all new copies of Vista *should* come with SP1 , and a word of warning if it doesn't.... Straight after new install go to MS.com and get manual install of SP1 and install it before you do anything else.

If you load your normal programs, AV, and all other 100 ms updates first, it corrupts the install and you won't get SP1 installed.
