A day out ratting

A guy in work uses a bird of prey.

Only last week he brought in some pics to show.. looks like a laugh.

I hate rats

Our terriers are from proper working parents, meaning they're good above and below ground. Dogs like that are a natural for something as comparatively easy as ratting; it's mostly instinct. That said, even the farm collie can and will grab the odd rat but it takes a certain type of dog to ignore the repeated bites and not get put off, but rather become all the more enraged and enthusiastic!

Anything with terrier blood, some of the smallish bull & terriers (pits, staffies, English bulls), teckels, whippets, lurchers and so on. Those are the dogs who tend to shine. That said, as with any working dog, genetics and bloodlines play a huge role, but a good one is where you find it!

You can't really beat a well bred terrier though. Busting vermin and going to ground is their sole reason for existing, so they tend to be very good at it ;)

Some dogs get bitten and decide/pretend from then on that they "can't" find or see rats anywhere  Most however become suitably enraged at the audacity of the biting rat and decide from there-on-in that it's their sole mission in life to find and eradicate every single rat, period. Those are the keepers :D

i have a 4 year old staffy, we go shooting as it is, never realy thought of taking our dog though!, never even knew people took there dogs for rats :o, i think ill look into it.

Although along with that isnt there a danger of your dog getting bit and getting rabies or some **** ?

Rainmaker: So what, you've fought one have you? Squared up to a badass badger did you? Honey badgers are American? Try Africa mate.

Yeah so they are - my mixup. I was of course referring to American Badgers. I've not hunted American badgers (or honey badgers) myself because of course we Europeans only have the European badger. Plenty of people in Ireland and Europe do hunt badger with their terriers, though. But what's that got to do with ratting?

Anksy, give it a go mate. Staffords are used by a couple of lads I know for everything from foxing to retrieving shot game (geese, pheasant etc). They're not a specialised tool, but as with most Bull breeds they're adaptable and will try anything once :D

Please people acknowledge I have no problem with hunting, it has its place and it does need to be done! I just have a problem with it not being done humanely.

Hunting badgers is illegal. Whatever flavour they happen to be. I watched a video of a badger bait once and sat in wonder as a guy watched his dogs tear the animal to bits whilst occasionally stabbing with his knife. I'd have risked prison to get at that guy with my fists. Whats it to do with ratting? Dunno, do you hunt badgers? RSPCA would love to know.

I have seen video's like that on the net most upsetting but what can you do, not everyone is going to share the same compassion as you let alone me.

Good God there are some ignorant people on this forum.

We could just let them continue to multiply and do nothing but they are not culled by natural predation as so many other animals are. We are responsible for a lot of the infestations due to our messy wasteful way of life so we must do the dirty job of controlling them.

Some of you should look into how your food (I use the term loosely) is produced before you go shooting off about hunting or pest control.

Tank: I agree but those scene's make my blood boil. I just keep an eye out on the local woods. The police and RSPCA are how shall I say this, close by. JBuk: It was being infered by rainmaker a few posts back. Gym time. Safe journey home all.

i bet some of you who have said this is wrong have never even laid there eyes on a animal rescue partition or even gave money or even helped in a single way, maybe some people should stop worrying about rats so much and look at bigger problems at hand

ive seen such bad things in the past like live animal skining and im not talking about rats, im talking dogs, cats normal every day house pets, which is totaly legal in some countries. if you so worried about rats, then go do something about things like that, and im on about a website called Animal saviors (just a partition site), not gonna link bad enough as it is, might take your eyes away from ******* Rats.

no it wasn't. It was you who mentioned them.

. Whats next, Water voles? Hares? Badgers? Minx? Actually yeah minx would be ok as they not a native or endangered species and they are seriously chavish to other wildlife. Wonder how long your dog would last against a honey badger.

Damn true. Agree with that man.

I've seen videos of domestic cats shoved together in cages, smashed onto the ground, their bones crushed and broken, their skin peeled, etc. Think it was in China or somewhere like that. Kind of worse than a few wild rats.

Speed: Read the whole thread before you post something like that.

I appreciate there are some idiots who think they are Rambo and should not be allowed near an animal let alone a gun or knife.

I totally agree that animal cruelty is not acceptable and if you hunt you should be knowledgable and skilled enough to do the job properly.

I just cannot agree with someone who does not think it is OK to carry out pest control but it is OK to eat cheap meat from an animal that never really got a life in the first place.

Hypocrisy.
