Diesel cash guzzlers: It can take 28 years for them to be cost-effective

Just like any petrol car though, although having vtec is an advantage rather than disadvantage.

I agree, but the two cams are made to compliment each other, and the economy cam is only designed to take the motor to the pont where the power cam can take over.
Hold on, this is going wayyyy off topic now lol.

Now, Diesel V petrol...where were we? :D

Never pulled out to perform a leisurely overtake when you thought you had plenty of time, only for something to happen requiring you to need a lot of extra "go" instantly?

No, because I always tend to perform overtakes at maximum attack therefore I'll be in the right gear anyway.

It carries plenty of merit as it gives a very real indication of performance.

In thery. In practice, its rubbish because its used to create utterly meaningless stats like 'The Skoda Fabia Super Rallye RS Diesel does 60-65 in 6th faster than a Honda NSX!'

Yea, I'm sure it does. But so what

Very true fox, and anyone that doesnt get a move on with overtaking shouldnt be bloody overtaking in the first place.

This thread is quite an eye opener.

not anything to do with the actual thread title mind...

Some people are bringing valid comments, but is it just me or are people dropping in random cack... kinda like **** stirring?
Maybe its just me

I just cant do it at anything other than max - being on the wrong side of the road is the most dangerous place you can put your car. I like to make sure I'm there for as little as possible

So yea, if I pulled out to overtake in the 530d in 4th it'll make it quite nicely. But if I drop the 530i into 3rd it'll make it even quicker so isn't that the 'in gear advantage' made irrelevent? If I drop the 530d to 3rd it'll go better but then I'll need to change gear half way through..

rgr miss read

Sry, now you've got me feeling like a bit of a ****.
Lawnmowers vs tractors :D...
Grr.
;)
At least no-one has come in with the dturbo of doom yet...
I should point out that, money no object, diesels wouldn't have a look in IMHO.
Here, diesel is cheaper than Petrol - wonder how the figures would stack up...
Shame it's not the same colour though, eh? ;)

But you're not everyone.....nor can you speak for everyone.
You're a keen driver, one that's been involved with the IAM. The majority of motorsits are far less clued up and even less interested in driving. For people like you and I prior planning is an automatic reaction, and as such it's rare that we are caught off guard by the actions of another motorist.
Sadly, this is the exception and not the rule.

That's a top gear roll-on though. Even the laziest of drivers wouldn't amble along in 6th and attempt to overtake without changing down. They might in 4th or 5th though and to get back to my original point even if they'd dropped down from 5th to 4th for a leisurely overtake then been caught off guard needing some extra whoosh, the diesel has plenty of it on demand.

In an ideal world I'd agree with you. But we don't live in an ideal world do we? The basic fact of the matter is that we have thousands upon thousands of drivers on our roads who shouldn't even be there at all.

I totally agree with your post.
However, I shouldn't need to point out that you take a more keen and, dare I say it, professional attitude to the task of driving and that just because you would do something a certain way doesn't mean you're the barometer by which all other drivers would do the same task.
Many panic, to a varying degree, and changing down isn't the first thing that occurs to them.....flooring it is.

It's been an intersting off-topic dalliance, all the same :)

I don't think anyone who isn't interested in driving is going to care enough and have enough willing forward planning to want to overtake tbh. I see plenty of people bunched up behind slow people and lorries on motorways and A roads, constantly dabbing the brakes, to prove this. :p

The cemetaries are full of people who thought they had plenty of time to overtake, only to be proved wrong.

Cemetaries are certainly full of people who are dead, but the fraction of them that died from a misjudged overtake is likely to be miniscule ;)

:D
