My friend says his laptop is almost as good as the pc i built 6 months ago which was state of the art back then.

nvidia 9800gt
quadcore 9450
4gb dominator ram
asus formula motherboard

I don't see how they can fit a quadcore in a laptop thats as powerful my heatsink is waaaay to big. i mean i have a antec 1200 case and all the parts are pretty huge spesh the gfx card so how can all that be put in a laptop

Are those his specs or yours? Those aren't laptop parts. Either somebody's misinformed or he's trying to fool you.

What model laptop does he have? How much did it cost? How much did your system cost?

there my parts

he has 4gb 9800gt not sure which cpu

but like my heatsink to cool the cpu is 15cm high so how do you get a quadcore in a laptop, is it as powerful? im sure a 9800gt go is slower than a 9800gt

even if it has the same specs i bet it cant run faster than a desktop

i guess what im asking here is will a laptop and a desktop with the same specs be equal in peformance?

like a desktop mobo would be miles better and that plays a good part in performance

Laptops use different CPU packages. They also tend to run them much hotter than you ever would a desktop.

Also, a high-spec laptops costs about 3x as much as a high-spec desktop. When yours and his rig are out of date in 18 months you'll get another and he'll still be making payments. :p

CPU and GPU can have similar performance to their desktop counterparts (you can't get highest end models into laptop, especialyl in GPUs) but other parts like motherboard definitely differ from desktop PCs.

Also laptop HDDs are lot slower.

Or more precisely change graphic card and continue playing with high graphic settings.

Gaming laptops are rubbish; his rig might be quite good now but it's probably cost him 3x what you paid and has a very limited upgrade path :)

ahahaha thanks for the replies

wow yeah he paid 3x more than i did that is crazy and i said just wait till i bang a gtx 295 in there next year or even a better gfx card by then

i think laptops should just be an extension of your desktop and nothing more

they might be expensive but that doesnt mean they are rubbish. the latest top of the line laptops are extremely fast. The cost doesnt really come in to it. it is veyr easy to find a laptop that outperforms a 9800gt-equiped pc in games if you are prepared to pay the price.

i think chasing graphics with a laptop is a fools game personally, but there you go lol

There are far faster cards than the 9800gt anyway.

Well I speak from experience, having had the first proper Dell gaming laptop, the XPS M170. It cost me near £2k and was out of date very quickly. It's also on it's third video card, after the last one melted itself due to the poor design.

Personally I can't understand why anyone would spend so much on a laptop when you could divide that £2k up and buy a laptop that is actually portable, (with a GeForce 8600 in it for gaming) as well as a monster desktop gaming rig, thus getting the best of both worlds. That's the setup I have now, and it's perfect.

So true get both! A powerful desktop and a speedy little portable laptop. I have the Asus 901 EEE pc myself and it's great just what a laptop should be for small, light and long lasting battery

THIS my friend is the answer - laptops suck and always will suck spherical objects in terms of gaming when compared to desktops - they are only good for basic computing and do that very well indeedy thankyou

If you play games then you really do need a desktop - no contest, but laptops have there place for other things, I use mine for HD Video editing and it works just fine. If you want to be able to upgrade the you have no choice but go with a desktop.
