Hi there,

I'm looking for a new phone, and I love the look of the Blackberry 8900. G1 is too big, iPhone too expensive and everything else I'm not too keen on.

I text a lot and the keypad seems ideal, also the idea of internet on the go sounds great!

Only thing is, people tell me its a business phone, and I dont use my phone "that" much.

Should I go for it? Im basing my view purely on the way it looks, never used one. I currently have a U600

I just got mine yesterday and I have to say I love it. It feels great to use with a nice quick, slick interface. Lots of options and I've set my email up on it very easily. In terms of texting it's very good. The keyboard feels excellent and I would like to add I don't have tiny 8 year old girl hands!!

Got it free on Orange with the Dolphin 35 package. 600 mins, unlimited text, 500mb internet usage and £30 in cash to cover the 3 months insurance (which I can and will cancel after the three months).

Yes get one!!!!:D

I got my very first BB back in Dec and since then ive been pretty much hooked on mine...BB's are usually for business but if you add a BIS/Blackberry internet service plan to your contract then you can get your personal emails pushed to your device ie if you have a gmail addy you can get emails pushed to your BB...quite cool and the best feature is the BBM...allows you to connect to other BB users around the world..think of it as Messenger but only for BB's. For me its great as my bro in Canada has a BB through his work and with BBM i can stay in touch with him 24-7 and not worry about sending of texts or emails...its done in real time.

The 8900 is one nice piece of kit though...its like a baby Bold...the one i have is the Bold and it has 3G whereas the 8900 doesnt..other than that its just a bit smaller, thinner and lighter over the Bold and comes with 256mb of ram rather than 128 which mines comes with. I just converted my missus to one...shes got one and absolutely loves it. Id get one but i use 3G a lot so for me its not worth it...altho i might get one on Tmobile when my upgrade is due in March.

8900 is an excellent device. I've been using one for about 8 months now. It's not just for business people - it's for anyone who wants push email, IM clients, social networking clients & the internet. It's my favourite BlackBerry to date.

BBs are great but we're moving to iPhones for the added flexibility, full web browser, etc. BB still has the best email service and general business features though - but the iPhone's net/apps now outweigh that for us.

Did you get it in a store mate like CPW/phones for you or direct with orange over the phone or Orange retail, if it was over the phone or retail you might wanna read your T&C of orange care e.g you cannot cancel after 3 months, if from a 3rd party just ignore me :p

It was from Phones4U, thanks for the heads up though :). P.S I'm writing this on my Curve whilst on the train!

That is true but RIM are about to launch their own App store like Apple has...should be interesting.

Got a 8900 from work for a few days when i went away for them and i have to say it was an amazing piece of kit, was so much nicer then my BB-Pearl and didnt crash like it does either, unfortunatly i couldn't keep it as it was works but if my 5800 doesnt work out it will be my next choice!

M,

According to Mercury Quality Center:

BB Storm has 2003 logged defects
BB 9000 Bold has 1140 logged defects
BB 8900 Curve has only 592 logged defects - so statistically you should go for the Curve if you are bent on having a BB. Which you should not be!

The G1 is barely any bigger then the IPhone (which is also crap btw) or any Blackberry... But it is far superior in any aspect then any Blackberry and especially the IPhone 3G. Hardware and software wise.

Email on any BB is terrible for the simple reason that you have to use the BB email server which requires you to pay extra for.

I would really recommend the G1 - or if you are looking for a blackberry that makes sense and actually works I suggest you take a look at the Nokia E series - they got full qerty too and they can send emails :o

Most BB users dont have a clue why they want one to be honest, other the to own a BB because their boss at work has it too - who is just as clueless :p

LOL...thanks for the laugh...seriously do you know anything about BB's?? or are you just spouting off because your a G1 fanboi??.

The G1 is a nice device ie the software is very good...Android is something to look out for in the future...that i will admit but who in the blue hell made the decision to go with such a FUGLY phone??..seriously that person needs to be shot repeatedly...the phone looks like a bloody toy phone...i like to call it the fisher price phone because it looks like one...cheaply made and yes ive played with one in a tmobile store and although the software is nice...teh screen looks like something out of a cartoon:p.

Saying that if you just want a phone then the G1 would be the way to go...if you want a more powerful device then i recommend going to a BB. You cant fault them, sure they have their issues but what phone hasnt??. The G1 ive heard has quite a few bugs when it was released...i suppose updates have solved a lot of them...its the same with BB's...they have their bugs but updates usually solve them. I dont think its a bad thing that you have to pay for the BB server....its why most people go for BB's because they know they will get a better product...my push email hardly ever goes down whereas i keep hearing people moan about Winmo and other devices failing. If you want a quality product then you have to be prepared to pay for it. Plus BB's are no longer just corporate devices...just pop over to America/Canada and you will see just how many non busines type people use BB's...when i was there last...it was like every 2nd person had a BB.

Also the newer BB's are pretty good at multimedia stuff...my Bold has replaced my Touch...i have a 16gb card in there and plays my videos pretty damn good considering. Also it has its own BB messaging system which is only open to other BB users...quite cool as well. Got friends from all over the world on it.

Once you go blackberry you wont look back...thats how i feel and ive only had my Bold since Dec...its addictive and its little wonder they are called crackberries...

so the only reason according to you, Spawn, he should go for BB because:

1. BB's are pretty good at multimedia stuff -* right...they are pretty good in comparison to a nokia 3330.

2. the G1 is such a FUGLY phone - ooook; its scientifically proven.

3.they have their bugs but updates usually solve them - love the usually as in not allways. Android is open source, there are thousands of people making and fixing new software constantly which you can download FOR FREE or compose yourself - with RIM there is nothing for free.

4. ...more powerful device then i recommend going to a BB. - So how exactly are BB more powerful ? Both the hardware and software is BY FAR inferior to any HCT device and you can only use RIM official software, which you have to pay for.

Staring your post with *LOL* and calling me a g1 fanboi clearly says more about you then me... BB fanboi ?!

... if you want a quality product then you have to be prepared to pay for it - yes, so why waste your money on a BB? Expensive and crap a the same time).

You gave no reason why BB is any good, at all.... Before you start shouting *LOL* fanboi - which I am not (not that it matters or you should care) you should get your facts right.

And yes; I know more then *anything* about BB as my job is testing them and every other device that is sold by Proximus Belgiums biggest mobile provider.
But the question should be, do you?
