Why do schools close when theres snow?

I never once had a "snow day" when I was going to school. EVen if the buses weren't running my parents would still drive me in :(

Cos not enough teachers (who often don't live locally) can get in to manage a school full of children.

Teachers can't get in / Heating don't work / Risk of slipping on Playground and a parent sueing the school etc.

If not enough staff are able to travel in to adequately supervise the running of the school, then it is simply not safe.

We did.. although it was a bad year if I recall.

I remember that classes where merged with other classes where the teachers made it. After awhile we were allowed out in the snow.. No snow balls though :) The 70s were great for being a kid :)

I was listening to a woman on the radio yesterday moaning about having to take her kids to school and the roads were bad.. She lived abot half a mile from the school

That said, people do tend to live further from their work place nowdays. I wouldn't expect anyone to risk the roads yesterday and teachers are no exception.

Our school is pretty much always open, only reason its closed is when the heating breaks down or the school that makes thier dinners is closed for some reason

Health and Safety.

Not so, we had the children out in the playground yesterday and they loved it. Us adults were bloody freezing but the kids didn't feel it. They sliding all over the place and trying to throw snowballs. We recognise the fact that children need to have fun!!

Well to put it into perspective there were no trains or buses running at all yesterday and the snow was too deep to move any of our cars so nobody was going to work round here, including teachers.

My school closed today for first time in 17 years.

Not enough staff could get in. I live 3 miles away and the amount of ice on the major roads just makes it too unsafe. I dont blame them really.

What did make me angry is ringing at 7.30 to be told it was open, then arriving just after 8 and being told it was closed!

MY school rarely closed, just put chains on the tires and drove to school. A few teachers would be missing, but there would be stand ins. Sometimes the busses didn't make it and people either walked or stayed at at home. School went on as normal. In 2001 I would through 2ft of snow to school, drifts up above my waist.
