Why does the UK grind to a halt with a little snow?

Well, I'm snowed in. I hate the fact that I am, but there's no way I'm driving into college with all of this ice and snow. There are so many hills between me and town that it would be more dangerous that it's worth to go in.

Ok so today was a different story, even though the motorway was clear and free from slippery surfaces the outer Southampton and Gosport roads were not! Even though I was driving slowly almost every turning I took at a junction resulted in the rear wheels spinning or the back end swinging out. These roads were either salted too much and were way too slushie (Southampton) or not salted at all (Gosport).
My workmate said he saw so many cars binned on the way to work but luckily I was taking it easy on my drive this morning even though DSC straightened the car out on those corners!

Anyway, pics today when I got to work, snow was thicker than yesterday:

All I can say is.. go read the article from Ulrika-ka-ka Johnsson in the sun.. it's rather seriously funny..

"ALTHOUGH I left my weather-presenting days behind many years ago, I woke up yesterday, looked out of the window and thought I was back in Sweden. Everything was covered in a soft, white blanket of snow and I jumped for joy!

Then I remembered I was in incompetent southern England and my heart sank. "

Someone should close this thread it appears some people are incapable of accepting the logical and reasonable explanation and others just have a bee in there bonnet about most people working for understanding companies who won't withhold there wages as a result of some freak weather.

I find it quite amusing that all this discussion has happened despite my clearly tongue in cheek OP which was simply an excuse to post some cools pics of snow :-)

Never underestimate the clueless people here who want to **** off Britain at every opportunity, despite never having any experience of living in a cold country themselves. :)

It amazes me that anyone makes a fuss when snow makes everything grind to a halt for a day or two. It's fantastic having a nice quiet day without all the normal rushing around. No cars on the road and a chance for families to muck around. It's like a second Christmas.

There should be a compulsory no-work rule when there's more than a couple of inches of snow.

Northern Ireland had a tiny bit of snow last night. I'd say that about 2mm was lying on the ground when I went to bed at 1am and this morning its all gone. Yet NIR (Railway company) is saying there are major delays on our tiny network. While its a radio commuincation problem causing the delays they are pretty much blaming it on the snow.

yup, this is the problem everyone is having. The main roads are fine, the side streets and residential streets are almost impossible to drive on, because they dont even think about clearing those roads. Once you get off the untreated roads its just like driving any other day, just a lot of standing water around.

Now we could get shovels and clear our own road, but we will probably have H&S or someone else moaning at us.

Drive slowly on the side streets until you get to the main roads?
