Im thinking putting one together... What are peoples experiences are they a big improvement? And what boards are you guys running them with? Are you happy with them? Interested to hear your feedback.

Cheers in advance

Just bought a PII 940 with the Asus M3A79-T Deluxe and 280GTX.

So far very impressed. Temps seem reasonable on stock HSF, even with it notched up to 3.4 (only with multi so far - no other adjustments needed) - should be cooler and quieter with the TRUE 120 slapped on it tonight.

As another thread is indicating, games seem very smooth. Not had one of the newer Intel quaddies, but have used E2180, E6600, E8500 and Q6600 - with the exception of the 8500 (which was running @ 4GHz) this is by far the fastest. Motherboard is v.nice too :D

Phenom II 940 here as well, on a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 with a Gigabyte 4870/512.

Haven't used stock HSF and went straight to an Arctic Cooler Extreme that keeps it nice and cool without much noise at all. Goes to 3.4 on multiplier increase alone (as daz says) without volts increase and fair tears along at a good rate of knots.

Day-to-day it feels very smooth, with things like Handbrake going pretty fast in comparison to the old X2 I had in this board. Gaming likewise, very smooth and playable without as much as a hiccup from anything I throw at it.

Very impressed with it so far.... could have swing for a new motherboard, but anything I bought wouldn't offer me enough above the DS4 to make it worth my while, and since the only thing I needed to do to get the Phenom working was a BIOS flash, it's a relatively cheap upgrade for me personally.

Great piece of kit though and I'd recommend one to anyone.

Bought mine (spec in sig) and it's awesome. Although, having come from a socket 939 system, anything is going to be faster than that but I'm damn well pleased.

Money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

With a good cooler (not water for this example) and a bit of volts how much do you think these will clock to?

CHeers lads, seems like universal praise, been offered a crosshair 2 for 140 so I think ill try running it on that and see how it goes as needs to be SLI.

Thanks for the notes, anyone used a sythe HS fan with AM2?

i have a 940 (well did have, it was faulty so im waiting for the replacemeant), it was fast and the temps was low about 25c idle , 32-35c underload. its a very good cpu.. i can't comment on overclocking it because mine was faulty..

hopefully if i receive my replacemeant tomorrow and if it's working, i'll try overclocking it.

Mine arrived yesterday, replaced my X2 5000+ BE.

Dropped the 940 in, reset bios, booted, change multi to 3.5GHz on stock volts, straight in to windows no problem.

I then raised the NB to 'AM3' levels and another notch on the multi, I'm now sat at 3.8Ghz STOCK volts on AIR and it idles in the mid 30's.

Awesome chip.

what OS u running, 32bit or 64bit?

my replacemeant 940 as just been delivered, i will be trying it soon :D

Really happy with mine. It replaced a x2 5000 chip.

The performance increases that I'm seeing in Handbrake are incredible. I thought it might be twice as fast but in fact its up to six times faster.

I'm using it with a Asrock nForce 750a board, 4GB of RAM and a 4780 1GB graphics card. The motherboard doesn't recognise the chip (I'm running the latest BIOS) but it works fine.

Hurry up :)

Edit: ill take that hurry up statement back as my memory is a little fuzzy on some members circumstances on this forum.

Surely if the volts are on auto then it's going to be raising them for you, post up a CPUZ screenshot.

Looking forward your update Gareth :)

It will not raise the volts for you unless your using an Auto overclock feature of some sort with in the bios.
