Grand Theft Auto 4

Boxed copy and getting increasingly angry here with this ****stake of an installation process.

It says on the site you need SP3, so it's not really a **** take, when it says you need it installed. :p

And the game uses flash on the main menu, its how its designed...and its no doubt all on the cd i would have thought.

Oh and what version of .net are you running.

And incase you didn't see it in the thread earlier: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13398995&postcount=4124

It asks for the cd key the first time you run it I think. It also takes a while to start the game, mine seems to do nothing for abour 20 secs before starting.

Make sure you have rockstar social open before you start the game too.

Dont know about anyone else but i am pretty much stuck on what i think is the last mission.

choosed to do the deal, then dimiti's hitman shot roman, so now jacob and me drive this car following this mafia guys to dimitri...so i get to the dock, shoot everything blah blah blah, get kicked off heli, chase him the boat, then i get on jacobs heli but its always there where i die/lose him or anytime before it. I tried this same mission about 10 times now...any tips?

What it asks for it too bloody much, I'm only trying to play a game there :p

Not really.

SP3, latest enhancements and hotfixes for your O/S
C++ redistributable, which to be fair most people have.
Flash player, most sites need this.
latest .net, always a good thing.

GWL: Blame microsoft
Social network (or whatever it is) I agree, I find this pointless.

Yet I didn't have to bother with anything like that when playing recent games, I've trying to install this since about 7 now and frustration is setting in.

Rite, answer my questions, and i'll try to help, the first time i played this, i had no issues running it.

On my new XP install, it did take me a good while to get the required things installed.

So tell me what is installed, and we can go from there :)

Well I've looked at some guides and I 'might' try the stunts and maybe some of the pigeons lol. I printed out and have saved a pic of all the locals of the pigeons. Deliberating what to do.:)

The thing is I find the idea of using a map to go and hunt down all the pigeons rather lame, I mean I'll just be going through the motions without it being interesting or anything. Plus I still have nightmares about when I used a map to try and get the 50 oysters in GTA:SA - I was crossing them off when I found them, then I got to 49 and found that I'd crossed them all out! I'd obviously missed one and crossed it out by mistake, but there was no way I was going to go hunting round each place again.

So far I've done all the drug deals for Jacob, the exotic car emails for Brucie, and all the Most Wanted from each island. That's bumped me up around another 10%. Also been working on the races but they aren't always available, think I'll try Vigilante missions next.

One thing I do find annoying is that you only get credited completion percentage when you complete the whole of an achievement. So for example, say you do 9/10 drug missions. You get 0% for that, yet as soon as you complete the 10th mission, it suddenly jumps up by 2%. So theoretically you could have a guy with say 70% completion who is actually much closer to finishing the game than a guy with 80% completion.

Well after spending a fun evening downloading and then upgrading to SP3, net framework, C++, flash, installing social club, GWL, linking GWL with social club, updating graphics card drivers it finally lets me start the game. Only catch is a fatal WS10 error which according to Rockstar means:

XNetStartup failed - Please re-boot your system and/or re-install the game

So you gonna have to give me another hour until I reinstall this and then let you know how I get on.

Yeah so just bought this, installed it, patched with 1.02 patch, went through the whole social club thing and downloaded Windows game thing and everytime I try to start the game it just doesn't do anything.

do ctrl alt del and check running processes, i bet theres something running related. I got around it buy initially starting in offline mode

ah, nvm. i see its running now :)

Also been working on the races but they aren't always available

There are 3 races on each main island (so 9 in total) and you need to be on that island to do the race. So if you're phoning Brucie and he says there's none available it's because you've finished all 3 on the island you're currently on. Assuming you've unlocked them, just drive to a different island and phone him back and he'll give you a race.

Well you can stay fairly close but the main thing is as he gets towards the tunnel move back so he can then run into it alone. Hope that helps.

Tried it another 10 times last night, still no go. He gets close to the tunnel but no matter what he either turns around and says I'm too close, or stops to stretch and then either says I'm too far away and mission ends, or as soon as I run up to him to get him moving again says I'm too close.

Seems bugged to me but then I'm the only one that it having these problems apparantly!

Oh and I upgraded from an e6400 to an e8500 last night and that increased my framerates in the benchmark (not highly accurate I know) from around 33 to 44, so decent uplift! Feels much smoother in game now.

I'm getting a weird problem with GTA 4. I get an 'Out of Video Memory Error' :(

However it doesn't run out of Video memory but the game runs my machine out of ram :/ When I have loaded up GTA 4 and I'm actually playing the game, I have around 1.8GB of free ram. This then slowly goes down over the space of about 15-25 minutes to about 245MB of free ram. At this point the games starts to stutter, and within in about 5 minutes I receive the 'Out of Video Memory Error'. However GTA 4 only has a 'peak memory use' of 1.7GB, so where the hell is the rest going ( My Vista only uses about 1.1-1.3GB of ram)

My Specs:- Q6600 @ 3.6, 4GB ram, 8800GTX (clocked), Vista 64 SP1.

I run the game at:-
1920x1200, High Textures, Highest Render Quality, Medium Shadows, Medium Reflection,
Medium Water, View Distance 10, Vehicle Distance 15, Detail Distance 15, Shadow Density 0, Definition on.

I have also read in this thread to turn the off the recording cam. However this hasn't worked for me. I have also tried tricking GTA 4 into doubling my graphics memory by using system ram, but that didn't work either. This is really annoying me now :(

Any Advice

Cheers

Seems that CPU is just as important (if not more important) than graphics card with GTA4.

Correct m8, GTA 4 appears to be more dependant on CPU spec than GPU spec.

As we have similar CPU specs (you have clocked your e6300 200MHz more than me) but have a different graphics card (I have a 4870 1GB) it would be interesting to know what FPS you get and what settings you are running.

Haven't a clue what FPS I was getting ( finished GTA 4 a few weeks ago and haven't played it since although I do still have it installed ).

Settings wise, I'm running it at 1440x900 as thats the native res of my 19" WS monitor. Had the detail level up reasonably high but again, would need to jump back in for a quick blast at it to check.

I'll post back later with a few details after I've fired the game up for a quick go.

How would I get the FPS, use FRAPS or the benchmark thingy within GTA4?.
