Hey guys i have had an offer made to me that im finding hard to turn down! My mates sisters ex boyfriend has to get shot of his 1 year old corn snake and he said i can have him for free with the eclosure, heat lamp etc! So can you give me any advice on corn snake ownership as the only pets ive had is a cat and hamster :)

Thanks.

Speak to the person you're getting it off and learn as much as possible. Read around. Basically you'll need a warmer end and a cooler end, with a localised 'hotspot'. Snakes are poikilothermic and rely on the ambient temperature to maintain their own internal temperature.

Make sure you have at least two thermometers in the vivarium. One at the warmer end and one at the cooler end. You don't want anything much under 24 degrees C or over 32 degrees C at either extreme. About 28 with a 30 hotspot would suffice.

Corns are semi-arboreal like most Ratsnakes, but will still appreciate hide boxes small enough for them to squish into and feel secure while they hide in the dark. Something that will touch their top/back will help them feel safe.

They're pretty easy and docile, you can't have a much better starter snake tbh. Any issues, feel free to post back. Oh and don't forget, TTIUWP! Enjoy :)

i have a corn snake, have hot end 28 degrees, cold end 22, have a piece of bark, for when he shreds his skin, likes rubbing on it to get it off, and a big stone, which has the middle cut out, and is very low, so he touches the stone with every part of his body basicaly, and can wuggle about to get perfect fit for him, if he ever goes to bite you, do NOT pull away, because if he grabs you, and you pull away, and you break the teeth you can give him a bad situtation with him feeding, they have tiny brittle teeth, they wont hurt you what so ever so dont worry.

Sorry to hijack but I need a snake expert to answer one quick question. I'm looking to get a royal python but I hear they aren't in season at the minute so I'd be waiting a while before I could get a baby. Anyone know when that would be roughly?

will be hard to get one at all imo, unless you know someone who is breeding :/ in that case they should know, and i think its early summer.

Spring is when most baby Royals start coming out. Do yourself a favour and avoid "captive farmed" Royals like the plague. They're basically from eggs collected in Africa, and hatched in incubators before being crammed into crates and exported to the West.

Royals can be tricky feeders at the best of times, but a CF baby just gives more troubles and will often have endo (or even ecto) parasites to boot. Check out some reptile forums for adverts for captive bred hatchlings in a couple of months. They're well worth the extra few pounds, trust me.

Na the captive bred Royal market is pretty huge now. They're cheap too. I paid £100 for a 100% het albino hatchling last year. Normal coloured ones are more like £50 to £60. I only point out the finances to dissuade you from getting a captive farmed one for £40 or whatever. For the sake of an extra tenner you'll save triple that in vet's fees and heartache.

Corn snakes are easy to look after, it should still be growing at 1yr old. Probably on fuzzies or small mice by now so cheap to feed too.

They're usually pretty docile and easy to handle really. Go for it :)

At a year old it should easily be pounding adult mice and/or small rats :)
