Why does the UK grind to a halt with a little snow?

Hmmm, snow.

The only time four inches can keep a woman in bed all day :p

Back on topic - I've managed to make it into work through all this "Day after tomorrow" weather. Sadly the only thing that kept me from doing my overtime last weekend was my VW Golf killing itself on the M8 :(

Que the forth coming "New Car Thread" ;)

I made it to work both days, I do know someone used it as an excuse and had both days off, load of BS if you ask me. I live the furtherest away and had to get the train and i made it to work, so has everyone else in the firm.

Worst snowfall in the UK for 18 years? I think not. In England maybe. Try moving north of the border, we get this almost every year (without any associated media frenzy). What you've had down there we refer to as "a light sprinkling", get over it and get on with it.

try reading the thread... It snows roughly once every 2-3 years down here. And when i say "snow" i mean less than a 1/3 of a inch, which also never settles on roads. Sunday through to monday, Hornchurch had almost 8inches of snow fall in areas, which due to how fast it was coming down settled on all roads, treated or untreated. First time since 1991 had so such snow fell. Gritters hadn't been out doing extra runs, and nor did they have snow ploughs on either. Hence the compleat grid lock. Buses couldnt run, and train lines was either blocked by small drifts of snow, or frozen up. Hence the no work day for some.

You get this snow every year so you say? well firstly i doubt that... not everyyear and secondly because you get to see some sort of snow every year you will KNOW how to deal with it. Your local councils will have the tools to deal with it etc. Oh and not to mention the population is so low in the north that theres hardly a problem at all if roads are blocked.

There's also a lot more to go wrong in and around London.

Yes up north you get this a lot, but big deal if your one bus per day doesn't turn up etc. In London there are THOUSANDS of buses out on the streets, thousands of trains etc etc etc. MUCH more roads to clear.

It's a bit of a bigger task than clearing a few roads so that you farmers can get out, and you can drive your tractors and Land Rovers anyway!!

Plus, if your bus crashes, it crashes into a hedge, if our buses crash, they kill people....

What on earth are you on about.

There's still no access to my office by road, but thankfully the trains are now running to Leatherhead so I made it in today. I'm quite shocked at just how much snow there is, this is a lot more than a little snow this is a major snow event - there's at least 8 inches of snow on the ground, the roads have been gritted but there is a massive layer of ice and slush on them. I'm sorry, but unless these sort of major snow events start happening with significantly more frequency than 18 years we'll never cope with them well.

I felt the Spirit of Shackleton while walking from the station to the office this morning :p

You were talking nonsense and borderline trolling so no, not really.

The same could be said of the "send the gritters out" brigade, who don't understand when it snows very heavily there is little grit will do.

The same can be said of those calling the suspension of bus services stupid....

To be honest, it is mainly people being pansy and not knowing how to drive in the snow.

It's been announced that Epsom in Surrey had the most snow in the UK this week, yet I live in Epsom where we had a foot of snow and I still struggled into work, even though I got stuck 6 times and had to shovel myself out twice, I still struggled in with some spirit.

Hmmmmmm. Me thinks theres some inaccuracy in that statement.

just like all the other statements about the SE during this snow storm?

the amount of people here that seem to think the UK should be fine suffering its worst snow fall since 1991 is stupid. Because of all the global warming idiots and partly due to the fact it DOESNT snow in the south of coarse everyone from the government to the average person is going to struggle.

Yeah you could say the councils could have been more prepared but, WHY have millions of pounds of equipment sitting around in council depots going totally unused for 15-20 years just in case it snows bad? There resources are fine for the odd dusting's of snow we get, but not 8-12inches.

and my "statement" is true anyway. Who cares if two foot fell at the top of some mountain when the local population at the bottom of this mountain is less than 1000.

i totally agree with what you said about being prepared for the snow overlag. it is pointless them wasting money on resources which they might not of needed had the weather been forecast wrong, or in fact if we dont have weather like this again for a long time to come

Well todays the first day of me not going in, and only because i phoned the site info line and it said "2-3 inches of snow in and around site, roads are hazardous, staff are advised to not travel to work unless essential to site safety"

I'm pretty sure thats a clear "dont travel to work"

the weather forcast here has been consistant since the middle of last week. why didnt they grit the roads last night? first day of me not going in as well. what a joke.
