Tell Me About Hatfield

I'm in Hertford. Hatfield isn't that nice a place to live, as lots of people have already mentioned, but it's likely to be cheaper than a lot of the surrounding towns (Hertford is very expensive and St Albans even more so!). The transport links into London are very good though, much more so than Hertford (despite having two stations to choose from you're looking at a bare minimum of 40 minutes or so into town on a stopping service - there are no express trains as such).

I have a friend here that's lived in Hertford all his life, and one of his favourite insults is "may you die alone in a bedsit in Hatfield" which, though a bit extreme, shows his thoughts on the matter :)

Can you give me a bit of help please :) As i mentioned earlier in the thread i am looking to move from Hatfield to somewhere like Hertford. Is there any places to avoid there?

I go uni in hatfield and on my placement year in st albans. Lived in hatfield basically 3 years now (not including summer/holidays etc..) there is basically jack all to do. Theres lots of chavs around and a lot of students around, the chavs dont really like students and vice versa which makes local bars abit... hmm. If I want to go shopping I always go st albans or welwyn unless I only need food or something simple.

Offtopic: Im going font friday, any other ocuk people going?!

It's a small town really so there are no great stretches of dodgy bits as such. The area known as "Sele Farm" is the roughest I think. There's also a housing estate called "Foxholes" which is somewhat cut off from town and of little use if you don't have a car, so it depends on your circumstances.

If you want to know more, the forums at http://www.hertford.net/yoursay1/ are worth a look to give you a taste of what goes on. It is, however, frequented by a lot of opinionated curmudgeons :D

I also lived there 4 years as a student and worked in Hertford for a year on my placement. My girlfriend is from Hoddesdon too, which is just down the A10 from Hertford.

All in all if you like a busy town, with lots to do, respectable looking people; don't live in Hatfield. Being from Portsmouth and moving there it was a complete culture shock for me socially. Nothing to do, nothing to see, chavs here, students there (two types of people in hatfield) and it can be a bit rough at times although is nothing compared to say Stevenage (avoid like plague).

If you are working in the Hatfield Business Park, I'd recomend living in St.Albans, Wewlyn GC or Hertford. Nicest places locally, all within 20 minutes commute of Hatfield (I used to do it, it's nothing). All again, within 20-30mins of London Kings Cross.

Nicest of places in order, probably: St. Albans, Hertford, WG

Good luck in what you decide, but don't live in Hatfield. I was so glad to move away after my time at Uni. I can safley say I will never be returning back to live there!

Friday nights are poo, although admitidly havent been to one since second year and Im now a fourth year, even so, Tuesdays are the best!

I know they are. I havn't been font since xmas in my second year and now im in my third. But hay, few friends are going and all her nursing friends... cant complain about that!

Band Of Brothers was filmed at Hatfield Aerodrome.....

If you go to it on Google Earth you can still see the Carentan set that was built for filming!!!!!!

Why do people keep posting about the Rail crash?

I can confidently say that my course is better than 90% of other courses in the country within the field i study, which is Film and Television

we have 10+ £5000 JVC HD cameras
Many Sennhesier sound kits
Expensive Kino/Diva lighting kits
All extra's such as monitors, radio mics, tripods, dyes etc

We have a studio that has £500,000 worth of kit in

25 mac's with 2x 22" monitors each to edit our projects on (Final cut pro)

We make 3/4 short films a year each, taking the role of director, cameraman, Lighting/DOP, Sound engineer and P.A

I'm also in 4/5 days a week...

Our head office is in Hatfield, so been there a few times. I get the impression that there is not much to do.

St Albans is a good night out and so was the night we had in Watford. Plus is that it is not far from London City Centre and also close to Luton airport as well.

Media studies, amiriteisntit?
:p

No, media studies is an A level, I study Film and Television and without people in the industry you'd never take a trip to the cinema again.

Guess you'd miss that?

I have 11 GCSE's and 3 A levels and would like to think i passed the first year without to much hassle.

I'm cool if you turn out to be a bank manager with a maths degree for example, just mean's you'll be sorting out my income whilst i direct films. ( this is for examples sake, I'm not arrogant enough to believe i am destined for success )

After having to live in Hatfield for 3 years whilst at university there, I can definatly say that Hatfield is the biggest dump in the country.

The area is horrid.

The people are the poorest, scummiest chavvy morons you will ever encounter.

Avoid at all costs

Some areas around Knebworth are quite nice, Hitchin was nice getting to chavy now , St albans great for Pubs and if you want to live in the second most expensive place in England lol. Dont think WGC is to bad, friend lives near the Hospital and is a pretty quiet area, not a fan of Letchworth, not going to comment on Stevenage even though i live in a fairly nice part of it.
