A day out ratting

Foxes kill for fun? Yeah but do they post the results on a forum????? I think not.:D THey are opportunists that take what they can get and bury what they cant eat now for later. If they had a currency, foxes would be great savers.

Told you someone would come out with that :D

am i wrong though? muslims have been killing people for all sorts of 'criminal activities' for thousands of years, just because they've always done it does it make it right for them to continue?

cue "i new someone would use extreme arguments bla bla bla"

Once again this IS a pest control thread. The Puritans just seem to find it outrageous that one should find it an enjoyable activity rather than crying over each little ratty grave and holding a service.

no, i'm afraid it quite clearly isn't, it's about you, going out of a day to have a little blood sport in the name of pest control, this you have made very clear.

1) I'm sorry but if you feel the need to glorify the needless savage killing of small animals then I am entitled to call you whatever I please.

I think you'll find that Spie and the dons would disagree.

2) Humans are omnivores- hence why there is actually no requirement to eat meat.

Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't stop me enjoying it though. Omnivore != vegan.

3) Hand in hand with evolution comes an increased sense of sophistication and compassion (aka being more civilised). You're actions are of someone less civilised.

I disagree, but we're hardly going to find common ground here, so whatever.

Stop trying to make out you are doing the rat population a favour. You're having them eaten alive! There are more humane methods that can be implemented than either poison or hunting.

I'd love to hear your 'more humane' alternatives, that would still result in acceptable levels of control.

Dog please.

Find an Asian cuisine forum? *shrug*

What are they? Death by dog is one of the quickest deaths a rat can experience.

the difference is that, whilst fly fishermen might derive pleasure from their activity they will be doing it for food, and in a much more environmentally manageable way. those who do it just for fun are idiots (imo).

i'm being perfectly rational, you'll find i'm being one of the more rational protesters against the hunting here.

I know a huge number of people who fish for recreation. You know, in sport lakes, are you even allowed to take fish home?

I don't agree with fox hunting. That's my perogative. I would never contribute to fox hunting, but i have fished for recreation and i see nothing wrong with that.

As for ratting, I have a terrier bred for that purpose. I dont encourage him to rat, it's unecesary where i live, but he *has* caught rats, and even when i've been walking him in fields he has caught rabbits. I've never punished him for it, and i will never punish him for it. It's a natural thing for him. I don't feel bad about what he has done, but i do discard of the mess into a hedge where a fox will find it.

As for rationality, it's in my opinion that calling someone an idiot for disagreeing is pretty irrational. If the guy was just saying "hunting is cool because i said so", then fair enough.. but it's obvious that he believes in it, and that he has well thought out, well discussed reasons for doing it. Whether you agree or not doesn't make him anymore an idiot than you are for not understanding.

When a fox kills a hundred or so birds in one night, that's hardly saving. That's way OTT and obviously far in excess of their needs or their capabilities to 'save' food for later. They bite the heads off and move on to the next one.

Enjoying a little sport while out pest controlling, yes. I haven't ever denied that. I find ratting wonderful sport, excellent in fact :D Whether you want to call that a 'blood sport' or whatever, or more to the point whether you consider that a bad thing or not, is your prerogative. Personally I have no problems with it, obviously. The main crux of the arguments here seems to be that I shouldn't be allowed to enjoy it. Hookum!

You know you've just inadvertently solved the problem to your own thread?

Next time you go out pest controlling, take a priest and an alter with you and a little box made to look like a coffin.

Make sure when you're done you bury them respectfully and have a nice service of rememberance. Take pics of that too! Get some posey shots with you with some members of the rats' family, showing "no hard feelings". Then take a few of the wake after where everyone is getting trollied.

Then at least we get a more pleasant, well rounded OP :p :D

sorry, but the 'hurr hurr hunting is fun' crowd have said some far worse things to those opposing them.

Rubbish. It's a living thing that presumably feels pain. Have you ever swatted a fly? If so MURDERER.

Flies don't have any noicipetors, so they don't. Besides, swatting a fly kills it good... and if anyone posted a picture of a squashed fly close up, well, it's not in good taste either.

Yeah, I'm certain the rats learnt their lesson and feel remorse for killing thousands of people by spreading plague because there was nobody exterminating the vermin

The rats didn't kill them, they were simply carriers of fleas that did the dirty work.

Blame the Europeans on killing all the cats because they were "the devil" :p

It's actually interesting to note that Iceland also suffered from the Plague, despite being no rats there at the time. Some theories even suggest the plague spread too fast for the rats to be major contributors. A flea is pretty much going to jump on anything that's warmblooded and use it as a host, especially when their previous host dies.

Rats caused a plague, people.

They were not the cause.

He killed some rats people, in the name of pest controlling. Let's all get over it now? He's not a cold blooded killer, who cares if he "enjoyed" it

Whatever you say, Mr Animal Lover And Supporter Of Animal Rights. Or if you'd prefer, Alasoar.

this threads just making me laugh now, just over rats, theres threads on buying snow off ebay, boa constrictors, but no you fight for thy rats! stand strong lads!

dont think ive ever seen a heated dispute on rats, or even people defending them, because they breed so quick and so much there literaly a plague. you wil one day regret defending them, they will out number us a billion to one, then youll be in the ****

Big deal. This thread is about rats, and people can post in any thread they place. Does it offend you?

This is more do do with animal welfare and "right or wrong" with "enjoying" ratting than it is with the actual rats. For me, I'll happily defend any animal that's being mistreated and abused... I don't see it with the OP though. But check out the "boiling rat" comments. I'm against stuff like that.

do what you want, it isn't necessary to post your fun little afternoon on the internet (much less a forum that purports to be 'family' friendly, but you have, and as such have opened yourself up to comments from both sides of the community, accept that some people aren't going to like what you're doing and will comment.

Thats extremely ignorant. Foxes kill for fun, for sport, not for the future. They decimate our food supplies if left unchecked. Just like rats eat all the grain that feeds the cows and so forth.

These things NEED to die for us to sustain our food supplies.

As for enjoying hunting them, why does that matter at all? The job needs doing and I'd rather someone who enjoyed it took care of the matter than someone who would be traumatised by the event...

Thank you Rainmaker for doing something I would rather not, for the benefit of those who would call you rude names :/

I don't mind that you wish to comment, that's what a forum is for. I do, however, wonder why you have to comment over and over and over again for many pages straight. You've made your point, and the majority disagreed with you. It wasn't "necessary" to post here, but neither was it in any way wrong. All the "cooking with", "relationship", "spec me" etc etc threads could equally be labelled "un-necessary". But this is GD, where we post, well, general things.

Thank you for enlightening us about good taste.

I'm still trying to perfect my one-swat fly kills. I'm sorry to say I have wounded a few of the poor defenceless creatures in the process though :(

Careful my friend; you made a thoughtful, well presented post there! :)

And thank YOU, that was an awesome thing to say. Oh and fwiw you're welcome ;):D

I'm still waiting to hear about these so called more humane methods of killing rats. The naysayers have frequently claimed that such methods exist but have yet to enlighten us.

I had a fox last week

With the semi auto shotgun.
Flushed him out and he ran in front of me, 3 x 2.75" no 3 heavy shot load carts took him down. the auto can spew 3 shells out in 1 second flat.
He was more "holey" then the pope, it made him drop the chicken.
Poor chicken was death though.
I did have a druid and a vet with me and we spent all weekend trying to bring the chicken back to life but to no avail. " this is for the tree huggers" to keep them happy.
Never mind we got the fac air rifles out and blew 128 starlings away instead with the odd fat rook.
Farmer was chuffed.
We earned our pay that day for sure, but I did use 7 ltrs of air from the divers bottle.

 I think this just proves my point about you. You really don't like someone pointing out the errors of your ways.... so you tell on them! LOL!

I'm perfectly entitled to an opinion of you whether you like it or not.

Chloroform on a teeny tiny handkerchief, then you pose them like a Knight of the Realm, on their knee's and resting their little ratty heads in their hand... and shove a letter opener down into the spine.

Very noble.

fair play, and i've only posted a few comments, (not pages and pages) and i full intend not to bother coming back into the thread, it's not like anything i say will change anyones opinions (i just like to let people know what i think :p). i just think it's not the kind of contents suitable for a 'family' forum, and yours is not the only thread in GD of late that i think that about, it just happens i picked on you because i feel strongly about hunting for fun as well as possibly inappropriate content for the classification of the forum.
