Sudden enlightenment and realisation of death...

Fair points indeed but I do think that the posters thing is a big far fetched. My opinion here is that the guy who organised this has no fear of Allah being real and therefore his only concern is to try to convince people there is no God. I believe that every person has some form of God consciousness and in some people it is this internal shying away from this that causes these actions. If this guy knew there was no God why would he be so bothered to put it on a bus? Obviously he doesn't believe in Allah and therefore he doesn't put a 'there is probably no Allah' on the bus. If he had there would have been a major outcry as it is downing someones religion, however, if it is Christianity it doesn't seem to come across as discrimination any more! Quite strange. Interesting thread - think I will leave it now to go watch cricket!

Allah and God are the same, that point doesn't stand - the slogan was probably shown to create balance in my view (religions have a voice and a drum to bang whereas atheism mostly keeps itself to itself) and to encourage discussion, which it has.

"THERE'S PROBABLY NO GOD" refers to any god people may have selected as the "right" one. It's beyond me how anyone can decide which one they think that is, given the total lack of evidence for any of them.

To the OP, I find it comforting that every animal in history has died or will die. I'm just one of many billions of others. Whatever happens to everyone else, will happen to me.

To me that means going back to the unaware state I was in prior to my birth. I'm not sure which event convinced anybody that this is not the case.

Im a Man of Science, and if some of you are also Science believers reading all this stuff about God is very funny and makes NO sense at all from people who think science is the answer.

Theres no proof or anything that there is a higher being, and that heaven and hell exist, at the end of the day there words which people made up once and stories which were passed down until now which could go back 1000's of years.

At the end of the day less and less people are believing in God, or a higher being. And Science is becoming closer and closer to finding out what really happened..

The big question is what will happen once we(Science believers) find the PROOF and evidence that there was no GOD and the big bang theory is true. because thats closer than we think.

what will happen to the rest of you of all religions who think theres a God? Carry on thinking God is real even tho hes not there after its been proven??

what will happen to the rest of you of all religons, you would have been proved to be long all this time...

I wouldn't use belief and science in the same breath. Science is a method not a faith and deserves not to be tarnished with language associated with religion. Ultimately of course I share your view but having waded through your poorly punctuated and worded post I had to find some fault with it:p

To those who don't feel the need for religion, faith is an obvious folly and a waste of precious time.

edit: also amusing that you felt the need to capitalise man of science, just like religious types capitalise god

I believe in the big bang and evoloution, but I also don't see how they disprove there being a higher power, all they proove is that creationism is wrong.

tbh i think things like this hit you as you grow up. I have thoughts of how utterly crap the world will feel when my family finally pass away. The real emphasis (obviously) is on when - its gonna happen, and is unavoidable.

Doesnt get me down o anything, just causes me to take a moment, and try to cherish the time we have.

You know, you sound pretty religious yourself. But you have faith in Science as opposed to a supernatural being.

What makes you think that the Big Bang is in opposition to the idea of a God(s)?

Let's assume the Big Bang is proved as fact - then what?

What is the big bang anyway? Where did it come from? What set it off? What came before?

Science is knowledge, nothing more, nothing less. There is still a LOT we don't know. You have faith that science will find the answer. Others have faith that the answer lies in something beyond our realm.

Theoretical physics goes into all kinds of weird things - 11 (?) dimensions, wormholes, "dark" matter, string theory, universe being in the shape of a pringle (are there more pringles? Even a tube?!) - to our ears it all sounds very clever and 'scientific' but really it's just complicated theorising on things we simply don't /know/ about.

Also - if we agree many dimensions are possible, do we agree that maybe there's something happening outside of our paltry 4 dimensions that aren't tangible to us?

I'm a fairly positive person, but when the topic of death comes up I like to feel that I'm going to be able to face it and accept it when it arrives; with a smile on my face and content that what is about to happen will be an adventure.

I was just having a chat about it with a housemate, and I had a moment that I've never felt before... I realised that what I base my beliefs on (science and not an ounce of religion), will mean that I'll never realise I'm dead, I'll be as aware of being dead as I was aware of being unborn.

It sent a shiver down my spine and sunk into me on a whole new level  unlike ever before.

Have you taken a second recently to think about what you believe will happen? I like to think it makes you appreciate things and try to fulfill life a little more.

Meh.

I've thought about it before but it really doesn't bother me. When I'm gone, I'm gone.

There's no point in allowing death to effect you, it's going to happens no matter what you do. Enjoy life while you can.

I don't see why basing your beliefs in science means you're not going to know you're dead. That's just pure conjecture, as you have no idea what death is going to be like. We cannot measure it, so for all we know there are an almost infinite amount of possibilties as to what life is.

As far as I'm concerned - I don't know what death is going to be like. I keep death in mind most of the time, as it reminds me to enjoy my life NOW; to make NOW the most important moment, as I could very well not have any more moments. I simply see it as the end of this life - whether that means I will continue to lead another life (whether that's reincarnation, another plane of existance, heaven, hell, etx) or if that's it, I don't know, and while I do encourage thought and speculation on the topic, it'll only ever be that. Speculation.

For me the shame of it all is in taking all the exciting questions the universe presents us with and blandly answering, it's all down to god. How very unimaginative, pedestrian and dull.

True,

However all the many bible stories saying God came down and created the earth, Adam and Eve etc. all wont be true.

they are obivously not true, as in to be taken at face value, given even our current understanding of how the universe works

what is your point?

I was always Christian as a kid beleived in God and all that Jazz but when I turned 14 I really got into science for some reason and started having different thoughts and since then it's escalated to the point that I want to belong to a religion but I'm not beleiving in anything really at the moment.

Rather a personal things really but It makes me feel better having a belief. I chose to accept my death whenever it happens (what else can you do) and just live life as it comes and accept whatever happens.

You'll find that yes there are a lot of vocal and narrow-minded creationists - but most Christians (can't speak for other faiths) believe that Creation, Adam and Eve etc. was al allegory to illustrate the beginning of the World for people who could never have understood the truth we are currently uncovering.

For me the shame of it all is in taking all the exciting questions the universe presents us with and blandly answering, it's all down to god. How very unimaginative, pedestrian and dull.
Yes, that is a shame. And particularly amusing are those that stick their fingers in their ears and go "LA LA LA CAN'T HEAR YOU!" when caveman and dinosaurs are mentioned.

But there are also many religious people in scientific research positions who see no clash between their faith and the pursuit of knowledge.

Have you taken a second recently to think about what you believe will happen? I like to think it makes you appreciate things and try to fulfill life a little more.

It did quite the opposite for me. Since I realised that everything I ever do will be forgotten within a generation or so at best, I took on a rather nihilistic view of life. I dropped out of Uni, stopped leaving my home, and lost interest in anything much beyond being distracted from how empty I feel.

Staring into infinity should carry a mental health warning :(

Yes but there is only a small minority of evangelicals who believe in these ideas now anyway, there will always be a few people who believe every word of the Bible.

The Bible was written before the scientific menthod was even invented so it's fruitless to try and understand it in scientific terms.

All that should be taken from the bible is the morality of Christian ideals, which is philosophy...not a science.
