Just looking for suggestions for this really as I'm looking to install a gigabit network around my house. I've looked up getting Cat5E UTP cable (external), faceplates etc....) but I need the important part of joining them all up. To start with I'll be connecting two faceplates (in different rooms) as well as connect my ADSL router in the following way (hopefully / maybe?)

Room 1
Room 2
ADSL Router (and wireless access point?)
Spare
Spare

I've been looking at either the Netgear GS605 or the DLink DGS1005D so I'm asking if anyone has any comments on either or whether another one might be better.

Generally speaking, ignoring expensive managed switches which are not needed here, a switch is a switch. Either will be fine. I'd get the Netgear because it looks better :p

Well, my adsl router is a netgear dg834gt so I know they are good.

Will I have any problems in each of the comps in each room getting its own IP because at the moment I use DHCP from my adsl router and I don't know whether the two (router and switch) will cause a conflict.

Personally I'd look at the HP 8 port unmanaged ones that are available for around £50, a little bit more than you pay for the netgear but its not made out of nasty white plastic (unless you happen to like that sort of thing).

My GS605 is likely to be replaced soon as it's really irritating me. I lock the NICs in my PCs at 1Gb but the switch keeps dropping one port or another to 100Mb until I power-cycle it. Try searching for GS605 here because I know other people have had problems with it.

tbh, a switch is a switch nowadays :)

i've got a cheapo belkin /spit on floor 5 port thing, works perfectly

What about the ability to use jumbo frames - I read that the netgear doesn't support jumbo frames and how does this really affect the transfer speed.

it's unlikely that you'll utilise 50% of what gigabit can do, so i wouldn't worry about it. Provided you get 50% throughput or better you'll max out your HDs.

Well I do a HD video editing and I edit on one comp and then transfer to another for viewing (this ones on a proper HD TV and burn to bluray) and txfr over wireless takes a while :s

I just bought a Netgear Prosafe 16 port gigibit switch for my house to replace my old Procurve switch.. Looks good, reliable enough and does the job.

Whatever you do you can only do it as fast as the Hard disks can read or write which is only going to be about 50MB/s gigabit offers about 130MB/s (135 theoretically)

True, but at least it's better than the 1MB/s I'm getting from my wireless atm.
