Too much thermal compound? Should i reapply?

does look like its overflowing slightly, i'm about to build my new rig. Should the compound cover the surface area of the cpu or is not important?

you really don't need a lot, the 2 small blobs you put on after the big line would have been enough (placed slightly closer together).

although i wouldn't have thought it would have been the cause of that much heat, the thermal pads that ship with many stock heatsinks are about as thick and they're not that bad (obviously, otherwise they wouldn't be fit for use)

So should i reapply?

In the past i have just stuck with the single line but i thought id experiment with the extra blobs on the side!

What should i do. Temps are ok. 70 degrees at 3.72ghz on prime 95 for 30 mins.

Hmmmm when I did my i7 with my noctua I probably used a similar amount as that but I spread it with a thin flat piece of plastic over approx 70% of the cpu area - is that wrong?

My temps are about 25*C at idle and 40*C on load - all at stock i7 920.

i'd just spread it out a bit better (use an old store/debit card) and remove the excess (shouldn't need to reapply if you've only just put it on.)

otherwise, just clean it off and start again.
