E46 - No fan,demister etc.

My air con makes a whine depending on engine speed, it's a pretty faint whine but as soon as i turn AC off it goes away. AC still works as good as ever and is icey cold. So what could it be?

Can't imagine a belt causing a whine, thats exactly what a failing compressor sounds like though.

To be fair it's an easy job on the E39 but the E46 has it in a funny location so it's a lot harder to reach.

Funny how mine went first and now everybody else's seems to be going one by one. Pete's has started to whine when it's cold now so that'll be on its last legs

LOL. My armchair diagnosis might be wrong of course. Even fi it is the compressor, it would probably go on for a long time anyway, they get really loud before grenading themselves, and make a horrible rumbling noise at idle speed.
