The Nokia 5800 Express Media (Tube) Thread

ok then, how about MobilePhoneXChange, fonebank, mazuma, oldmobilephones etc etc. they all will pay over £200 for the n97 for example. it just seems odd.

You mean n96. And I agree with you. If you can get a more expensive phone free on the contract, its worth seling it and purchasing the 5800.

i'm so confused- why are people considering buying this phone on contract when it costs only £200 new unlocked? Surely the sensible thing to do would be to get the best handset possible, sell it on, and bag a 5800 with money left over?

example- i can get 400 mins, unlimited txts, and 250mb data on orange for 25/month 18m contract (minus the new vat rate, so about £23-4 odd), and a touch hd for £50 credit. i can then sell the hd on gaybay for approx £350- £450. you know the next step- bag a 5800 and enjoy spending all the excess on, well, excess.

why on earth would anyone consider spending £540 on this phone on contract??????? dude where's my car?

Some of us like having a 1/2 price contract for life, and to use the term "only £200" is a little shocking tbh, I wouldn't have considered spending that type of money on a handset as £200 would be 10 months of my contract paid for, Also because I'm on a Friends and Family discount plan I don't get offered the same handsets that a new customer or an upgrading customer would get offered, that they offered me a Nokia 5800 for £27.22 was way better then I had expected and a welcome upgrade the phones i were offered didn't even come close, these were the phones I was offered for free:

Nokia 2610, - Free
Nokia 3109, - Free
Nokia 6300, - Free
Samsung C180, - Free
Samsung U600, - Free
Samsung U800, - Free

And these are the upgrade prices for the more popular choices:

Sony Ericsson C905, - £243.62
Samsung Pixion, - £175.11
T-Mobile G1, - £145.74
LG Renoir, - £126.17

So i think a Nokia 5800 for £27.22 was a good choice, don't you (the Nokia 5800 isn't in my upgrade choice on there website as its so new so i had to phone them to get the offer i did),

But i do understand where your coming from, if i wasn't in my situation then i wouldn't have looked at the Nokia 5800 and would have gone with something like the Touch HD on Orange or dare i say it..... an iPhone on O2 (although there plans suck),

M,

Had a play with one of these today, the touchscreen works better than I thought it would and the general speed and feel of the phone was good.

Contract is up for renewal in 3 days and was already stuck as to what to get, this hasn't helped and is also now on my shortlist lol

Get a fair bit of kit with the phone, cheapest I've seen it for now is Free on £15 per month which is stupidly cheap.

mobiles.co.uk have it on o2 for £25 per month with 11months at half price!

Very tempting indeed, only thing that puts me off it is the crappy camera.

Yep, the camera is a lot worse than my old n95-1, and its nothing to do with the resolution. Also in low light environments the auto setting is terrible compared to the n95. By lowlight i mean anything where you arent outside with the sun shining. A shame really as i did like using my phone for photos a lot.

yeah i see your situation meritor, the thing is- when i first asked for an upgrade from orange they quoted me £399 to upgrade to the n96 with 2 months left on my contract. so when i was 1 month away from the end of my contract i called them and said i wanted to leave and requested my code to transfer my number. 1 week later i called them and said i was leaving to o2 and asked if they were going to be realistic about a renewal price on the n96, i was then told that they would take £5 off my bill and give me the phone with £50 credit!

its all about timing i guess.

Heads up - I hear nokia is going to have a sale and slashing price to under £200 on the 5800... At the moment they sell for £250 sim free.

Well sim free at CPW for £200 + £20 topup with T-Mobile. Then you can phone up T-Mobile support at a cost of 25p and get it transferred to any other number. I did this today. I simply explained I'm already on contract with T-Mobile and therefore don't need the credit. Sold the £20 to someone I know for £10. I'm sure you could get more.

I wonder if the "Comes With Music" version will have the same RRP of 279 euros.

mine was less than £215 in the end. been on it for an hour- the screen is so nice! internet works a treat, feels good.

apparently nokia have now sold over 2 million of these bad boys so far. why would they reduce the price of there best selling phone? confused.

tell me guys- which phone would you rather have- n96 or 5800? i've got both in front of me and so far the 5800 is winning...

If ya dont take camera into account, 5800 hands down.

yeah i'm starting to realise that. the camera really is terrible, god its awful. what a shame! still, every other part of the phone seems really well put together, the internet is so much faster to load than my n96. the os is amazingly easy to navigate too (i'm not used to this in a nokia!)

hard decisions await me.

Is the camera worse than the 2.0mp one with a scratched up lense on my W810i? If it's even remotely better it'll do me :p

What's browsing like?

Simple, they want to steal the market. An awesome little touch-based handset priced like this is unheard of... and 2 million will only be the beginning. If every contract is giving these abies away for next to nothing then soon EVERYONE is going to be wanting one of these, they could quite literally revolutionise the market.

The N97 could be a dream machine if they upgrade the CPU and add GPU acceleration. I'll probably buy it anyway though. Wonder when it's due for release... i'm thinking mauybe March...

I think it might be pushed back as far as July to give the 5800's hype time to die down and not effect the potential sales of the n97, I know the phones are totally different but a lot of people will take the 5800 for free over the n97 for what ever the shops will be charging for it (I'm thinking at least £150 on a £35 contract, who knows maybe more!), and with the recession people are looking to make do rather then get the more expensive option, still wont stop me getting one to try out though :D

M,

Have been playing around mostly with the video playback tbh as that's what I wanted it for mostly, whilst the screen size does not compare to the HD the quality of playback and picture is excellent given the right source. Have just converted Kung Fu Panda to 640x360 MP4 and it is superb. Colours and contrast is very good and playback is also smooth and stutter free.

Hi Sneaky can you tell what you are using to convert video files with to transfer to this phone.
My Mrs has just got one as an upgrade and we tried to trasfer a film over to the phone for her but the handset didnt recognise the file format.
i think it was still in xvid avi format.

I've looked into the phone, seems pret good, and I'm considering getting one.
Can anyone tell me however...
- can you get MSN [or similar] on it? [more of an S60 question, I guess]
- how good the WiFi is?
- Is the coloured bar just down the side of the phone? some pictures I've seen seem to look like the whole case has a reddish tint to it?

Thanks =]

There's a few convertors out there, I've tried a couple and they all seem to do a reasonable job. Can't rememeber the name of the one I'm using at the moment but I'll check and let you know this evening. I've been converting them to .mp4. <edit> It's Free Zune Video Convertor..

Wifi is good - on a par with the N95 and e71 etc imo

There is a red strip around the phone which has a translucent effect to it so shows more vibrantly depending on the angle of the light. The back has a very slight dark red, plumb like hue to it but very subtle. The main casing is gloss black though.
