hey all, got my 37" px80 today, happy with it, didnt realise how big it would be

anyway, plugged my ps3 into it, and went to display settings and just put it to 'automatic' and it chose 1080p! And it comes up in the top left corner of the tv saying 1080p, now im confused, because normally when this happens a tv that only does 720p - like the px80 should go blank?

It will accept a 1080p signal and downscale it to fit the TVs resolution. Not actually sure which would be the best scaler, the PS3 or the TV.

I tend to leave my PS3 to output at 1080p when feeding my 720p set.

I own the PX70 and i find the tv scales 1080p better than 720p, i think it may be something to do with the PX70/80 not being full 720p (which is usually 1280 x 720) but has a resolution of 1024 x 768. I would just leave it set to 1080p

I would leave the PS3 setting at automatic, then let as this will let the tv then scale it.

Always what I have done.

I use 720p on mine.
Im not sure if its a good idea the TV getting a 1080p signal and then downscaling it to 720p. I just feed it 720p so the TV doesnt have to do anyting and just displays what comes in from the PS3. I dont see the point in sending it a 1080p signal when the tv is 720p...

it isnt 720p. there isnt a display out there thats native 720p as far as i know. its 1024x768 remember. a px will scale everything its fed bar 1024x768 over VGA, and if that 1024x768 doesn't take the aspect ratio of the display in to account, it'll look all squished and silly :p

This ^. Common misconception that a set is 720p, but to be correct it is obviously actually 768p, which is something that I add sometimes.

Leave it to automatic in the PS3 menu ;)

The 37" PX80 actually IS 720p native as its resolution is 1024 x 720 so setting 720p should result in no scaling, it's the 42" that is 1024x768.

Though I believe that all the PX/PZ series use the same scaling chip so they all tend to work internally at 1080p then downscale the picture to whatever res is needed.

Nope, 1280x720 is 720p native....this set is 1024x720. It has to do some scaling and it's got more information to work from trying to scale 1920 down to 1024 than from 1280.

The difference is probably negligable though so entirely up to the end user for their preference :)

I seem to remember years ago looking at HTPC stuff (Descaler etc) people recommended upscaling way past what the display was and letting the card scale it down as it looked better than just upscaling to the native res.....again this is all down to whether or not YOU can see a difference.
