I think they're all well thought out (though I can take or leave the tree one), and quite pleasing to look at. It's a shame you can't see glowing embers or smoke coming from the (assumed) smoker in the Kunming alley, but it remains an evocative picture. Would you recommend the region? I've only really done the more developed parts of China thus far...

I was only in Kunming for a night and a morning, so didn't really see much of it. Was mainly in Xishuangbanna. Great weather, especially for trekking. Although I wouldn't like to do so in the summer. As well as getting uncomfortably hot (like much of China), it's also the rainy season :s.

Here's one which is certainly no-where near there:

KPeh, are you based in Kunming? Not many OCuk users over here...I'm living up in Dalian, but currently in Hainan to escape the minus zero temperature stuff.

Pleasant! No, sadly I live in Xi'an which is a rather dirty, polluted city which I expect to abscond from next year. Kunming seems pretty attractive though, not least because it has clean air. Wasn't really around long enough to see much of it, however.

So, Yunnan was my Spring Festival break. I guess Hainan is yours? What's Dalian like normally? I think, come the summer I'm going to wish I was far further North than I am now. I'm British, I can handle the cold -- but heat above 30 (or 40!), eep!

Try Hangzhou, lovely place to live!

I quite like Beijing for living, stayed there for a week and hoped it was longer - Hangzhou for 8 months though, followed by 1 1/2 years in Shanghai.

Xi'an is a complete dive, couldn't wait to get out of there!
