Ok guys help me decide what car to get next. I will trade my car in and finance the rest, upto a maximum of 13k.
Have looked at the astra cdti 888 and also the A3 2.0 TDI. Any others I should be considering? 3 or 5 door, prefer a diesel but petrol ok and also no bigger than a A4 size car.
Thanks fellas

What exactly do you want? A regular diesel rep hatch or a performance car or what? And why the annoying font? Why use car finance on the rest when the value of your Cupra R buys a decent car anyway?

the 888 has 200bhp and thought that if i do end up getting a diesel then most of them can be chipped to get an extra 40-50bhp. Performance and economy rolled into one :-)

What do you want the car for?

I want roughly the same spec/performance (I know a diesel will be slightly slower). Will be using it for the daily commute to work, 20 mile round trip and also as the main car at the weekends. We have a family of 3, The missus, my 8yr old son and myself.

Get another petrol car then, you wont get Cupra R performance out of a diesel hatch. 20 miles a day is 4400 miles a year in commuting.

Agreed. You dont need a diesel and wont see any savings from having one. Get a petrol that gives you the same performance.

You are unlikely to save with a diesel. It costs 12p a litre more or 54p more per gallon. If you do 30mpg on the Leon, it will be 1.5 gallon or £5.80 a day. On a performance diesel you may get 40mpg so just the single gallon per day or £4.40. You save a massive £1.40 a day.

If you borrow £5k @ 7.5% you're looking around £155 a month or over £5 a day. So you end up with a diesel and a £3.60 loss a day.

Nothing wrong with car. Insurance is only £280 fully comp. But had it 4yrs now and think its time for a change thats all.

I know a guy with a Rally spec mini, light rust which needs sorting (i would guess the 2k mark) and its a change you won't forget.

ST220 :)

Ok it's probably not as friendly on fuel and it probably costs more to run but it's a great car :p

And you can get a minter for half of your budget ;)

Having driven an 888 CDTi Astra, I'd say go and give one a go. (As long as it's a genuine 888 with the suspension/brakes package.)

It's still quite refined despite the stiffer suspension, and the 200BHP is quite entertaining.. It does actually handle quite well, and will give any hot hatch a run for it's money, even in the twisty stuff.

They did a VXR Astra Vs 888 CDTi on fifth gear, and the diesel did exceedingly well against it.

I have to say, the ST220 Mondeo is certainly better, but obviously has the higher running costs, if you can live with those then you will get more entertainment from it.
