"Number of alien worlds quantified" - BBC

How the hell can you reliably estimate that.

I have £1.63 in my pocket. From that, I conclude there are 16,300 alien words with life.

its all just an estimate based on nothing at all

Not true, we know the rough age of the universe and the elements / conditions required for the building blocks of life to be initiated.

This is enough to create a ballpark figure based on what we know of the stars and planets found so far.

You're absolutely right but we're in a transition phase at the moment with half the planet still living, or at least thinking, stoneage.

and the other half with elements which want to return us to stone age (greenpeace and the like). UK should be the world leaders in nuclear fuel, but they killed it of.

What an easy job some scientists have!

Their 'research' shows there could be 1000s of intelligent life forms out there. Great. Thanks for that. My research shows there might not be 1000s.

Find anything else Mr Scientist?

Oh yes! They estimate there are between 361 and 38,000 intelligent civilisations out there! So they are out there!

Agreed, think of all those millions of years it took us to become intelligent life.....alien beings could have visited and now become extinct, who knows! It's a scary thought that they could have selected and breeded creatures like on spore! :D

something, or anything..... they are extremes. Of course he is, that's not what I was saying, but to be annoyed over a period of history that we can doing nothing about is a bit, for want of a better word, pointless.

I dare say it shaped the world in which we live today.

That we could be the creatures?

We could be their lab rats and when they realise we're destroying Earth they will wipe us out to pave way for a new civilisation that takes better acre of their ecosystem!

Or is that TDTESS...hmmm.

It's a shame we had 400 years of the Dark Ages where science was illegal. Could be so much further ahead technologically right now :(

I think you need to brush up on your history... It's a common misnomer that science came to a halt during the "dark ages", and "dark ages" isn't a term that serious historians would use. Whilst science and technology did not push forward at a terrific rate in Europe, Look to the Middle East and India for examples of massive leaps forward during this time.

Back on topic- more and more of the numbers in the Drake Equation we're starting to be able to quantify a lot more accurately these days.

Sorry, the "Early Middle Ages" (if I'd have said that would many people know what I was talking about? ;)).

No question of belief. It's a fact that aliens have been visiting Earth for last several thousand years. Many of our technologies are gifts from them. It is a different matter that our Governments and some our scientists are in constant denial. Maybe this is their policy or perhaps the aliens have asked them to keep their identity secret in lieu of technical inputs given.
