Discrete sound cards - worth it?

I just wanted a general opinion on whether it's worth getting a discrete sound card in the current market. The mobo is a Gigabyte X58 chipset and it will be mostly used for gaming but I will be using it for movies and mp3 too.

So is it worth buying a discrete sound card or will the onboard 7.1 do the job?

a discrete soundcard is only worth it if you've got something decent to listen to it with, like high-grade speakers or good headphones.

if you do, then it's definitely worth it

Or use the onboard digital output and an external DAC.
