I need a word that means, approximately:

"an attitude of high self expectation, that results in one rarely being satisfied with one's achievements"

Any suggestions? :p

I was hoping for something more... esoteric :p

Perfectionist is close, but to me that refers specifically to where you have begun something and you aren't happy with the end result. In this instance, I not only want to refer to that, but also the disappoinment in what you didn't manage to start or finish, specifically rather than generically.

Perfectionist does seem to be most appropriate.

No, no - I was just writing an email, and my brain stopped when I went to type the word.. as I couldn't think of one to fit! :p

I'm sure one must exist. I'm tempted to email the OED.
 
I would say a 'delusional purist' would fit that criterion best, I don't think this is a single word meaning that definition. Perfectionist is the alternative but I agree, it's not quite it.
