why buy an i7

You have to remember this is an enthusiasts forum, so many people will upgrade because they want the new components, not nessecarily need them.

Exactly this, i upgrade every 8 months i would say, sooner when it comes to gpu's lol

Its a hobby, i like playing with new toys :D

I wouldn't have upgraded if I had a Q9550 but my Q6600 seemed really old.

Day to day tasks I have noticed no difference what so ever, but its fun to have new toys.

There's no reason for you to get one since you already have a good cpu. I went for it because I was tired of my old amd 3000+ and wanted the best thing on the market. I don't upgrade very often.

When I upgrade I will get an i7 but I am coming from an s939 AMD FX60. I wouldn't bother investing in a Core2Quad system now.

However if you have a 45nm Quad there is no point unless desperate to increase your 3DMark Score etc.

Q9550 in place? No way would I upgrade, wait at least a cycle until DDR3 comes into value - which could be a while. Also the mobos are terribly expensive atm.

Lap your cpu and overclock the hell out of it. Perceived problem solved.

Hopefully ;).

well i chose to upgrade just to see if i could hit the 4Ghz and give my 4870 x2 some leg room as i plan on putting another one in towards christmas

also i sold my old q6600 motherboard and ram and 8800 gtx for a good price so no complaints been fun playing about with it so many new settings with x58 boards still dont know what half of its doing but will get there

Why buy an i7?

because:
1. it is the fastest CPU for a PC,
2. it can support 8 threads via HT,
3. It shows you have money to burn :)

Personally I would love one, but I don't do anything on the PC that requires the grunt it provides so to date I haven't. However that is not to say that come next payday I won't have convinced myself I can't live without one :)

you will only notice the power of an i7 when encoding or other number crunching tasks

my i7 at stock encodes a video [700mb movie] in 8 minutes

at 4ghz its does it in 5 minutes

handy if you need it

also i do a lot of video editing which is where it comes into its own

for a gaming system it simply isnt worth it

although it has allowed me to go sli

imo the old sli systems were simply not good enough
best thing nvidia ever did was to allow intel the rights to use sli

I bought an i7 system because I was upgrading from Skt 939 & the I thought it best to buy new technology as opposed to spending hundreds on a decent but now older 775 setup..
