OK, I really don't have the space for one but I'm getting tempted anyway.

What size compressor is really needed for home use? I've used a little one before and realised the limitations of it in terms of keeping up with airflow.

What kind of capacity am I looking at to ensure it is versatile?

The current things I'd be looking to use it for include using it to power a die grinder and an oil extractor.

Get at least a 2.5hp for that. Bigger the receiver tank the better.
I'd advise to take tools CFM requirement ratings with a pinch of salt unless it's a high quality item from a good manufacturer. For example the DA sander I have is rated at 4CFM, my compressor puts out 10CFM but still it runs out of air in a matter of seconds when using that DA.

Oh and @Nathan, how accurate is your tyre inflater? My generic type inflater has the worlds most inaccurate gauge on it.

We had one with a tank the size of a small hatchback, but the compressor on it broke. :(

Was brilliant for tyre pressures, as well as air ratchet guns and for spray gear too. :D

It's a proper bo one. Old fashioned dial gauge but really really accurate. You have to line it up like a gun sight to get the reading spot on.

I actually have several though, a couple like that and a digital one... my dad seemed to collect them at one stage :o
