The Nokia 5800 Express Media (Tube) Thread

Yo.

Fellow 5800 owners, have you managed to get the GPS to work?

Mine doesn't work at all, it hasn't managed to connect once.

I've just had the 5800 and my Nokia 6110 Navi side by and side and the 6110 locks on but the 5800 just whines about GPS not working indoors.

EDIT: Good news, the 5800 seems to lock on in seconds now, much faster than the 6110. I hope it's a consistent trait...

Probably turned on A-GPS. It will cost a couple of pence each time, but basically the phone will get the data of the current locations and satellites visible so that it locks in seconds. If you have unlimited internet, it doesnt cost anything.

I found with my n95 as well, relying entirely on the internal gps took minutes to lock.

As a side, I know I've said this before but I feel like moaning. The camera is terrible! It can't handle anything other than perfect light conditions.

yeah the camera isnt the best i've seen but then its so cheap with all the features it has i have no complaints about it. Whats missing from this device , almost nothing.

OK people with this phone some Qs:

Does it have a decent calander? Can it sync with PC?
Can it use online calander?.
What about scheduling?
How about note taking?
Can I easily make notes , audio, picture notes etc?
What data can be synced between a PC? (using what software?)
Does it have push email (where email will just appear on the device?)
Can I e.g. get 2 of them (for her and I) and use them to have shared calander/contacts between both phones Over The Air?

Can i index photos with some data , e.g. take a picture of a business card, name it and be able to search for it, and pull it up?

Why does nobody talk about these kind of features, it's all just about the CAMERA and the MEMORY etc etc..... <yawn>

Do I need a win mobile device to get the kind of functionallity I talk of above?

Does the browser do flash?
Are there any screen shots of e.g. bbc,co.uk / ocuk.co.uk being displayed on the browser? Is it EPOC browser or Opera or something?

Can someone post some demo low light shots on this thread. I know my 6233 is a great phone but camera is a bit shocking in low light - video is great tho

All these questions can also be answered with a bit of searching/legwork on your part. :)

There are plenty of sample pics (good light and low light) if you Google some reviews. :)

> Does it have a decent calander? Can it sync with PC?
It syncs with Outlook/Lotus Notes/Apple iSync out of the box. Standard S60 feature.

> Can it use online calander?.
Yes, try goosync.com (+ swim for choosing sync interval). Alternatively, you can sync with your Exchange calendar using Mail4Exchange (free from Nokia).

> What about scheduling?
Not sure what you mean.

> How about note taking?
Yes. Standard S60 feature.

> What data can be synced between a PC? (using what software?)
Nokia PC Suite supports e-mail, calendar, notes, music, photos, data folders, sms, etc. Getting it to sync with iTunes is pretty easy too.

> Does it have push email (where email will just appear on the device?)
Yes, download Nokia Messaging.

> Can I e.g. get 2 of them (for her and I) and use them to have shared calander/contacts between both phones Over The Air?
Over the air contacts would be possible using Exchange. Google Calendar is probably your best free option for calendar sharing.

> Can i index photos with some data , e.g. take a picture of a business card, name it and be able to search for it, and pull it up?
You can rename photos in the file browser and the built-in search engine should find it.

> Why does nobody talk about these kind of features, it's all just about the CAMERA and the MEMORY etc etc..... <yawn>
Because it's based on a common platform. People are already aware of what S60 is capable of. The hardware is the differentiating factor.

> Do I need a win mobile device to get the kind of functionallity I talk of above?
No.

> Does the browser do flash?
Yes, Flashlite 3 (aka Flash 8 + video support).

> Are there any screen shots of e.g. bbc,co.uk / ocuk.co.uk being displayed on the browser? Is it EPOC browser or Opera or something?
Standard browser is Nokia's WebKit browser. Opera is available too. A quick GIS should bring up the screenshots you're looking for.

thanks for the reply. I have never used an 'S60' phone. So I just don't know how it handles, and what it's capable of. My most recent Nokia is a 6210 which is old skool.

I'll check out some of them leads thanks.

I remember when working on them back last year one release had a truly awful bug that if you locked the keypad then took the battery out then the screen never became touchable again - needed a reflash.

Any one of yours got who wants to be a millionaire on it ?

So you are referring to a bug that was on a phone last year? Im failing to see the relevance.

I worked on the development of the phone, I was only making conversation so no need to talk like that.

Sorry, I think I misread your post a little, and was rather under the influence last night! Completely my mistake.:o

Just noticed Vodaphone are doing these for £25 per month, free phone with 600mins + unlimited texts.
