3GB or 6GB with i7 920?

Sorry to necro a thread but what was the conclusion?

Looking at the current prices it's either a slower 6 gig kit or a faster 3 gig kit. I read the various links etc.

I'm planning on getting a 920 and pushing it to around the 3.3-3.5GHz mark, is 6 worth the speed loss?

Get 6GB at 1333MHz.

Some of the GT memory modules from corsair run at 2000MHz would this be achievable on the Asus boards with a 920 processor ? Is the Memory multi available to be able to run the modules at full speed.
As i am thinking of taking the plunge and am an i7 noob.
I would only be able to afford 3 x 1 gig sticks as its quite expensive.

Yeah I think most of the motherboards have now implimented the mem dividers but 2000mhz seems a bit excessive. 6gb of the ocz reapers is much cheaper and 1866mhz.

Thanks for that.
Is the OCZ stuff compatible with all the x58 boards as i dont know if i should go Asus or Dfi.

I should think so but I have heard of asus having issues with certain ram, it may have been ocz but I can't remember exactly. Haven't heard of any problems with the dfi. Don't take my word on this though.

3G's is out especially for 64bit users, so that leaves only 6Gb.

sorry to come in with a random noob question, but why is 3gbs so bad for 64bit?

i opted for 3GB ddr3 because i wanted to save cash and i thought i was going to stick with 32bit OS.. i ordered another GTX 280 to run in Sli recently and then i realised from reading another thread that the memory in the 280s is counted with the system RAM, i knew the limitations of the 3gbs on 32 bit OS but stupidly didnt think of ther other components memory... so obviously its a bit crap having sli GTX 280s on 32 bit OS... so anyway, im getting my free copy of Vista 64 on monday... whats so bad about 3GB of RAM with 64 bit? it will run ok wont it?? im not going to have to try and sell and buy 6gb?

edit: read the whole Corsair report... would seem that 3gb is insufficient! :( anyone want 3gb ram? lol

im stuck with the same question, 3GB or 6GB

currently leaning towards 3 simply because of the price gap between the two

I thought that only the 6x and 8x memory multipliers work with the 920. Using an 8x multi, you would need a BCLK of 250 to tale full advantage of 2000MHz memory... very unlikely!

heres a noob question 6x1gb or 3x2gb?

basically i already have 3x1gb 1600mhz gskill, upgrading to vista 64 and after reading that report kind of makes me want to upgrade to at least 6gb... should i try and sell the 3x1gb i currently have and then buy new 3x2gb? or just buy another 3x1gb modules for around £100?

Have you actually looked at the page you link to? Unless I've missed something obvious, he is running a BLCK of 200 with a memory multiplier of 5... the memory is running at 1000MHz (i.e. half it's rated speed). FAIL!

Someone please correct me if I've got this wrong!

i thought as it was ddr it was twice that so it would be in his case 2008 Mhz
