Tell Me About Hatfield

I also live in Hatfield and I used to live in Harlow. During my time in Harlow (during secondary school and college) I didnt think an area could get any worse, poor and chavy with a pants town center. Then I moved to Hatfield, poorer chavvier and quite possibly the most shocking town center in the whole of England! No night life at all and none really near. (Batchwoods is ok but mucho idiots)

Other than these issues its fantastic because I live here :D

It's a small town really so there are no great stretches of dodgy bits as such. The area known as "Sele Farm" is the roughest I think. There's also a housing estate called "Foxholes" which is somewhat cut off from town and of little use if you don't have a car, so it depends on your circumstances.

If you want to know more, the forums at http://www.hertford.net/yoursay1/ are worth a look to give you a taste of what goes on. It is, however, frequented by a lot of opinionated curmudgeons :D

Many thanks! :)

And for the people who go to Uni there the new Student Union will be opening next September and will have many bars, very good equipment and a large venue. I had a tour round the site and it seems like it is going to be pretty impressive.

I work at the Uni so any questions on building works aim them here

After having to live in Hatfield for 3 years whilst at university there, I can definatly say that Hatfield is the biggest dump in the country.

The area is horrid.

The people are the poorest, scummiest chavvy morons you will ever encounter.

Avoid at all costs

You've never been to Liverpool, Leeds or Nottingham then?

I dont need to - Ive never heard of or seen a deserted town centre like hatfield, the main attraction to hatfield town centre is Asda.

When you walk outside asda youve got iceland and some greasy burger shops and the occasional 40-50 year old man drinking a can of stella in the middle of the day.

The only good thing about hatfield is the university and the time I saw the electrician from DIY SOS in Comet.

Pretty much all the houses in Hatfield are terraced and very shoddy ones at that, just take a look on google maps and you will see the houses snaking about all over the place.

In summary, Hatfield really is chav central

as much as I dislike Hatfield town centre it's hardly fair to say it's worst at anything. Anyone who does has clearly never been to the many worse places out there.

I Don't live in a council house, my house is also large and not terraced

The Tesco area> Asda

The business park is nice (where the Porsche garage is), I'm close to the Uni and the Galleria. There are some horrible parts to Hatfield (Around 70% I'd say) and some that are acceptable.

The Town center is bad, i agree with you there, not as bad as the hilltop though.

Did you visit the new business park with all the new houses/Gym/Car Garages/Chinese Buffet etc?

I live near the hilltop, IMO it is much better than the town center. Less junkies :P

and the Chinaeast buffet is pretty good.

The old town of Hatfield is clustered around Hatfield House. The ancient parish church of St.Etheldreda, which stands in Fore Street, dates from the 13th century. The old town and its trade depended on the Great North Road and later the coming of the railway. The new town of Hatfield began to develop in the late 1800s and became an important railway centre.
It expanded dramatically in the 1930s following the opening of the de Havilland aircraft factory. Some of the most famous names in air transport, including the Comet and Trident, were manufactured here. It was Geoffrey de Havilland who brought the plane makers to Hatfield. His company became Hawker Siddeley Aviation and then British Aerospace. As recession in the early 1990s cut deeply into the world aviation market the company was forced to end production at the Hatfield site in 1993. Succesful efforts have been made to encourage the redevelopment of the site to bring new jobs and opportunities to the area. The Hatfield Business Park is located here. In 1997 the former airfield site was used by film director Steven Spielberg as a location for his award winning film Saving Private Ryan.
In 1998 Hatfield celebrated 50 years as a New Town. In May 1948 it was designated as one of 28 New Towns selected to help re-house the post war population.
The town has a traffic free town shopping centre where an open-air market is held on Saturdays and Wednesdays and a Farmers and Craft market on the first Saturday of the month. Hatfield Swim Centre, first opened in 1966, has been extensively modernised. Plans are underway to redevelop the eastern end of the town centre. Population 28,000

the Chinaeast buffet is pretty good.

Love that place, me and my girlfriend would eat there every night if we could afford it!

Hilltop is alright really, for what it is; a small row of shops in a residential area.

The town centre leaves a lot to be desired, and the plans were scrapped for redevelopment which is crazy!

I lived there for six months before moving to St Albans - it wasn't as though I disliked it, never ran into any trouble. The town centre is appalling (nice fancy dress shop though!), and the Galleria isn't much better, basically a chav version of Bicester Village.
