I'm sure there is a few people on here who have done it, I've been looking at jobs in Canada & France for the past month now. Just after some advice, how long the process takes, if you thought it was worth it or if you miss the homeland. That kind of thing.

Canada & France are my two countries of choice.

France I understand would be easier, due to my having an EU Passport, but I'm tempted just as much by Canada.

One thing I have to pay off is a career development loan, would that count against me? I can afford to pay it off in one go, but would rather keep up the monthly payments as I'll be charged for early repayment.

I am off to Canada in early May :)

Depends on what visa you are after to how long it takes, although there are a few tricks to get out there quicker.

Canada to France is like choosing to live in Britain vs Albania. Yes, it's easy in terms of procedure, because of EU, but France is just such a bizarre place to work, it's unreal. To work in Canada you'll probably have to go through points system, which will be extremely easy for you, especially if you are under 30, native English speaker with additional good knowledge of French language. However, Canada is absolutely worth any hustle and processing.

I love the French food, the culture, the language and the city (I would want to live in either Paris or Toulouse).

If you love food, the culture, the language and the city then go there often to visit. Work, working rules and work ethic in France is completely backwards though. There are things which are just mind boggling (like inability to fire people who somehow amalgamated into background for few years and now have absolutely no intention to do any work at all, which makes most of French offices unbearable places full of completely useless pricks looking to shift their workload). To give you an example - I am currently involved in hand over of product to French company (absolute empire as well), and we are in the middle of two week procedure, after around 7 months. Product was run by two of us on British side of operations, and there are three departments working on it "full steam" on French side at the moment. I'm sure if you dig deep enough you'll probably discover someone out there is still fullfilling contract to finish Maginote Line for Hitler's arrival.

Have you ever spent a good amount of time in France? I don't mean a holiday, but how normal people live? Yes the centre of Paris is okay, but the suburbs are a REAL dive. I mean proper ghetto.

I've always just found France so boring and the people arrogant.

Why would anyone choose to live and work in France, unless they are retiring?

Serious question, I've never seen the attraction!

Have you ever been to the south of France, I've travelled extensively and one of my favorite places of them all was a small hill town called St Paul Du Vance

My Mum lives down in the South West of France (Near Toulouse funnily enough) and has done with my Dad for the last 5 years. My Dad didn't work but my Mum does and they loved it. My Mum is moving back in a few months though as my Dad died, but they had a great time down there :)

I wouldn't want to live there though. My GF has her heart set on moving to Paris but it doesn't appeal to me whatsoever, as much as I like it there for visiting.

Yes I've holidayed there quite a few times now, and for a 5-7 day holiday it is great, and we do a lot of activities, as well as relaxing, but after 7-10 days we both get quite bored out there and come home. Other places I have been on holiday for 2 to 3 weeks, even a month in Malaysia, and didn't get bored once!

Canada is awesome. I'm currently in Toronto (been here since July) on a 1-year unlimited work visa. I just graduated last summer, and wanted to spend some time out of the country before I started work. Unfortunately for me, I'm a) returning to the UK in 5 weeks, and b) completely feel at home out here, and don't really want to go back.

It's a tough decision to make.

france, from what i understand, has an excellent health service and very very good state run childcare - not that either of those are good reasons for you to emigrate...

Yey well I have two job interviews coming up, one in the centre of Paris and one in a suburb, Velizy.
