On Friday night I walked down to the trainstation to meet my girlfriend who was coming back home from Uni for the weekend, but spending Friday night at mine. Her train was set to arrive at 11.30, and because she always complains I'm constantly late I made an effort to get there on time but ended arriving about 11.15 so I sat down on a bench on the opposite side her train would arrive on to wait.

On the opposite platform, on a bench abit further down from opposite of where I was sitting there were two lads. They looked to be around the age of 18-21 and were being a little loud, and giggling quite a lot but not being offensive or any real nuisance. Anyway, 2-3 minutes later a guy with a ridiculous-looking green beany hat stepped on to the platform with a black lady. I don't know if she was his girlfriend or friend or what but they walked past me, up the steps and over to the other platform where the two lads were sitting. They walked down the platform and sat on the bench furthest down from the two lads. As they walked past I noticed the lads were having a little joke and a laugh, and I assumed it was about the guy's beany hat, because as I said, it did look rather silly. A little cruel but harmless I thought as they hadn't directly said anything to the guy.

Anyway, another few minutes passed and the two lads started to get a little louder and one of them started shouting something. At first I couldn't make out what it was, it just sounded like a long drawn out sound, kind of like 'NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHHHHHHHHHHHHA'. It wasn't until they'd shouted it a few times more, and for the fact that everytime they did they kept laughing hysterically and looking down the platform at the black lady sat there that I started to think it was '******' they were shouting. I still wasn't 100% sure that it was '******' they were shouting until one of them quickly said 'golliwog'. Then after that what they were saying became a lot clearer and they just kept shouting it again, again and again. There were even some monkey noises too. It was very uncomfortable and I could tell the black lady was very uncomfortable and her friend/bf seemed to be trying his best to chat to her as much as he could, trying to keep her distracted but I could tell he was affected by it too.

My girlfriend's train was about 2-3 minutes from arriving by now and on my side of the platform a female station worker came out of one of the buildings and crossed the platform. I was sure she was going to tell the lads to stop it or leave, or even just plain kick them out on the spot but it turned out she was just crossing over to wait for the imminent arrival of the train. What is even more amazing is that the lads carried on hurling racist abuse while this station worker stood literally 3-4 yards directly infront of them. At one point one of the lads even got up and had a word with the worker, although I couldn't hear what it was about.

My girlfriend's train was seconds from arriving now and in a way I was regretful of that because entering the platform on my side was a black couple, of which the male was rather built and looked like the type that wouldn't take any crap. I really wanted to see those guys taught a lesson. Anyway, unfortunately as the black couple were crossing the bridge to the platform the racism was happening on, my girlfriend's train arrived and the lads got on, aswell as the couple they'd been hurling abuse at. The black couple also got on the same train. I'm sat here wandering whether those lads would have dared say anything with the black guy there. I'm regretful that the train couldn't have been delayed 5 mins or so. I'm also wandering whether anything might have kicked off on the train, as the train was very small, only two carriages long so it's not unlikely that everyone previously mentioned might have been sat in close proximity in the train.

Dunno why I'm posting this to be totally honest, just wanted to share it. It was really uncomfortable witnessing it and it made me very angry. I think if it had got any worse I might have gone up to the lads myself, which kind of brings me to my next point. What would you have done in a situation like that? Not necessarily your friend/girlfriend being racially abused, but just being insulted/abused continuously and so blatantly? No doubt about it, if it was my girlfriend I'd be over there in a second to give them a knuckle sandwich, regardless of the consequences of no doubt being caught on a camera doing so. It's just not right.

Its pretty disgraceful what people can get away with though :(

If it was my GF they would be on the tracks faster then they could say bobs your fathers brother.

That is sad. You should have told someone even the lady on what these lads were saying. These kind of situations make you think, sometimes can never act on the spot.

The opposite is some black kids shouting racist abuse at white people, yet no one ever really cares about that.

Granted it is wrong but confrontation in this situation would have probably ended badly, either the lad in the beanie hat being arrested for assault or depending on the guys he could have ended up in hospital.

They did the right thing to ignore it.

no-one said anything to them? pretty sad tbh

then again they probably felt like idiots because they didnt say anything back to them

Hmm, that's crap, i was after watching a movie that had a kind of Plot like the one above... i mean the racism kinda thing called "The Secret Life Of Bees (2008)". I think it's ridiculous how people think they can get away with such things like that, but unfortunately for some strange reason people do still get away with it, i'm not sure what i would have done, i think to be honest i would have just taken it to be honest, if i were to go over and get them to stop, even if i was able to kick their asses, next time... they would make sure they had a gang of friends, it's how they work isn't it? if they can't do something themselves they bring more people until they can.

anyway, what would have been good if the well built black guy ended up been friends with that beany guy and gf, i would have loved to see the reaction on the 2 boys faces running scared!

Not everybody is like that two boys, but i do think theirs still quite a few people which think it's completely "ok" to single out coloured people, which i do think their should be some sort of punishment for it because it's completely unfair.

if i was the man i would go up to them and say "you know its funny your saying the word nig***, after all the most powerful man in the man is a nig*** himself"

I don't think you can label someone who has the academic excellence of Barack Obama (nearly wrote Osama Bin Ladel there) as a nig***. There's black people then there's nig***s, ask Chris Rock.

Why is it for every racist event there's the need for somebody to post/state that? It's always racist events. Never on anecdotes about sexism, ageism etc.

Yeah OP i've seen the same sort of thing before whenI lived in BNP Lincoln... it's sad but that's the UK today, full of yobs who really don't give a **** who they hurt.

What a completely silly and irrelevant thing to post.

People like that want the attention.

Fair play to the couple for ignoring it, only worse things can happen when confronting idiots like that.

This world is shocking and especially this country atm. Cant go anywhere without some little ***** starting something.

ive never witnessed that EVER!
not saying its never happened but if it has... its hardly on the same scale

I've never seen any public racism and I use public transport everyday so things like this make me think I must live in some weird bubble, am just unobservant, or that it doesn't happen in london (assuming this story didn't happen in london of course). Stories like this are quite shocking though. It's just hard for me to imagine because I live and study in such a multicultural place. Ignorance still exists it seems.

I think people would certainly care. Having said that, how often does this actually occur?

I'm a white man, 36 years years old, and in all my time I have never once been the victim of anti-white racial abuse, nor have I ever seen it directed at another white person.

The sad reality is that unless you are prepared to fight/be stabbed it's safer to say nothing. it's probably why the station attendant just looked on.

White people aren't really insulted based on their colour, i've been insulted and intimidated by people jumping about screaming in patois rifling through my pockets, not much you can do when you're outnumbered.

i can think of a few choice insults though that i wouldn't use against a person of colour but i can seperate white people based on where they are from and there are plenty of phrases that are just as insulting. sheep plucker ? mick? southern fairy? scouser :p

just because we dont have a history of oppression doesn't mean we are immune to being the victims of derogatory comments or insulted.

Racism is like cancer?

You don't live with it, or tolerate it, you kill it! Otherwise its spreads and infects.

Or in this case, you stand up and make as much noise as possible to make everyone aware of what they're doing. That's what I did in a busy town centre after I saw some **** shouting about ****'s getting out of "his" country after England won a football game...

You should have seen how small the man looked when all eyes where upon me and him, as nobody jokes around when they excuse someone of being a racist.

Always try and make a scene though is my advice. They can attack you or kill you still if they have sick demeanor, but if they see 5 witnesses seeing a one sided racist attack, they're won't try anything. And you should always point out that you have witnesses all around you. They're stupidity blinds them.

But don't let racism be tolerated in any sense. Its like cancer, its spreads and it kills ultimately.
