I wanted to resize a partition and, after a quick search on here, I saw GParted mentioned as a good tool. So, I downloaded the bootable iso image and burned to CD.

It all started up fine and I set the specifications of the resize. Then the hell began. It sarted a process and estimated 2 hours until completion

Fine, I'll do something else while that happens. So, that finished. Now it's started "copying" and it's estimating 4 HOURS till it's finished!!!

Is it joking with me? 6 hours to resize a partition? I swear I've resized partitions similarly before with other tools in a matter of 10-15 minutes. Now I can't cancel the operation without causing "SEVERE FILE SYSTEM DAMAGE", and so I'm stuck.

Is this normal?

It doesn't sound normal, but then I've not used that particular tool. What OS? And I hope you backed up before starting the process.

It all depends on the data in the partition, where the data is stored in the partition and what's before and after the partition. A few weeks ago I resized the OS partition on my system disk, so this involved shrinking the partition behind the OS by 30gb and then expanding the OS partition by that 30gb, that took a good few hours to do, can't remember how long as I started it and then didn't come back to the PC till late evening.

XP SP3. No backup, and it's my "life drive" with music, photos etc. As long as it's not totally ******* it up I should be able to recover from any issues.
Was the drive defragged beforehand?
Nope, but then the fragmentation level of the drive is always very very low. I've never defragged it in years, and every time I check every month or so there's no change.

Resizing doesn't usually take that long. However if you resize AND move the partition start point it will take a stupidly long time. The estimate it gives you is correct.

yes a very brave man. I personally would not have attempted that without a full backup. It is really worth having a backup if you have not got one. In this day and age it is very easy and cheap to do.
It is also very soul destroying when you do lose all your data.
