Killzone 2 Demo - First impressions

On the subjsect of input lag i found this on gamasutra http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3725/measuring_responsiveness_in_video_.php?print=1
Just a snippit from article
I tested various other games, with various results. I'll list the results in 60ths of a second, and the results have been adjusted -2 to account for the plasma lag. All games are on the PS3 unless noted otherwise, and I've included the PS3 system menus and GTAIV for reference.

Games that run at 60 fps:

* PS3 System menus: 3/60ths
* Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360): 3/60th
* Ridge Racer 7: 4/60ths
* Virtua Tennis 3: 4/60ths
* Ninja Gaiden Sigma: 4/60ths
* PixelJunk Racers: 4/60ths

Games that run at 30 fps:

* Genji: Days of the Blade: 6/60ths
* Tony Hawk's Proving Ground: 8/60ths
* BlackSite: Area 51: 8/60ths
* Halo 3 (Xbox 360) : 8-10/60ths
* Skate: 10/60ths
* GTAIV: 10/60ths
* Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: 10-14/60ths
* Heavenly Sword: 7-18/60ths

The first question that arises is: why are there no PS3 games with a response time of 3/60ths? The PS3 UI runs at 3/60ths response time, so it's quite possible. Why do all the 60fps games run at 4/60ths?

Still, that's still pretty good, and those games all feel quite responsive. Guitar Hero III on the Xbox 360 manages a very impressive 3/60ths - very important for that type of game, especially when it's actually 5/60ths on many TVs.

Next, why so much variance between the 30fps games - ranging from 6/60ths to 18/60ths?

It's worth noting that while EA's Skate seems like it would be a bit sluggish at 10/60ths, it actually feels quite responsive, in large part due to its use of stick gestures for input, as the movement starts before the gesture is complete, yet the player mentally synchronizes it with the end of the gesture, and so it actually seems very responsive.

Theres also a good article linked http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1942/programming_responsiveness.php about game input lag.

Has anyone considered that this is deliberate, but not to add the aforementioned weight? By this i mean, how do we know the delay in aiming isn't due to GG wanting excellent animations, when a player turns for it to look realistic the model would need to 'animate' its way into a turning movement. Same with firing the gun, what if they've stuck in a quick 'bracing' animation and trigger movement?

Complete speculation but yeah.

i really hope thats not the case, thats basically butting graphics in front of gameplay which is just a big NO :o

i just had a bash on the original killzone on the ps2. that feels exactly the same.

face it killzone just isnt a twitch shooter.

It's nothing to do with it being a twitch shooter, sounds like an excuse and nothing else.

I fail to see how the delay of a button press relates to the style of shooter they were going for.

I'll agree with the 'burying head in sand' comments...

To really think the videos show 'nothing' and are 'laughable' really shows your amazing fundamental lack of common sense.

It's is however interesting to see how brainwashed you can be with the PS3 to somehow try and spin this is a really great thing, and GG are pushing barriers with it or something!..

LOL :)

So I guess I'm now allowed to call you an ass, Because you said I'm brainwashed. I havent noticed any problems. To call me brain washed because of it, Sorry, BUt yeah. You're an ass

It wasnt directed at you at all :confused: but thanks for the childish response.

The comment about being brainwashed was a reaction to the dismissal of the video evidence as laughable and poorly thought out. In actual fact it was well thought out and very valid. Brainwashed may be the wrong word, but I cant understand why anyone would dismiss such a simple test so strongly...

Oh yeah I got the semi-auto rifle earlier and it's so satisfying, that gushy headshot sound is pure bliss. :D

I didn't even know that gun existed. When I saw this peculiar-looking rifle on the floor I was like :eek:

It really is like a futuristic Garand of doom! Pity it's only available towards the end of the demo.

I'm the same, for once ignorance truly is bliss. Some people are just more sensitive to these things than others. I'm not denying it exists, i just don't notice it.

I can't notice it either, but then again i'm relatively new to FPS games on my PS3. So i didn't expect to notice it, even knowing it was there through reading a few posts in this thread.

Like the feel of the game, hate the control interface ie the bloody pad, mouse/keyboard *** imo. CAn't believe all the fuss going on about the input lag. Are people palying the game for fun or trying to just find issues with it. I guess in this part off the world anything with a sony lable is treated like that.

The amount of whining displayed in this thread is hilarious! I've been playing the demo non stop all weekend and think this game absolutely ROCKS! If I've had this much fun with a ten minute demo I shudder to think how much fun I'll have with the final game!

Face it girls, there's nothing wrong with the game. Either shut up and enjoy it or leave it alone.

There is something 'wrong' with it which is proven in a video over in the last page; the game has over double the amount of lag input than your typical shooter. What does confuse me is the amount of uproar about it, the game is perfectly playable still and it only takes a couple of playthroughs of the demo to adjust to it. It's a minor problem being treated as game breaking.

Uhm, as good as the game is, there is something wrong with it so maybe you should shut up, I don't understand how people turn such a blind eye to clear proof that the game suffers from input lag.

It's not going to stop me from enjoying & playing it, but I'm not gonna flat out deny that it exists. That's almost as bad as the people who think GTA IV doesn't have frame rate problems.

Ha ha!! No it is not! I cannot detect any thing 'wrong' with the way the controls work. It is different to COD4, that doesn't make it wrong. My god! You people are weird.

The third video you posted there is what i noticed straight away and it has really put me off the game :(

Ahh thank god that's sorted then! Seeing as you don't see anything wrong i guess nobody else can. There is obvious input lag(to some people, me included) and people cannot get along with it. It's just how people are, not everyone plays a game the same as next person.
