Hey,

I have been thinking about upgrading the stock cooling on my 8800GT as it runs a lil toasty at the moment.
So I am here to ask if it would be possible to run two PWM fans from the graphics card fan header as I would like to control it from the driver or gpu bios.
Obviously I would have to disconect one sence wire so only one sends its speed back, or are control and sence linked in some way?

cant give you a full answer but if this would work the driver would only control the fan speed if you plug the fans into the card also note the card is only likely to have one fan plug so a spliter may be needed. sounds a little messy to me
 
Yeh I was planning to plug them in to the card, if its possible to work with only one sense wire I'd just cut them to length and clip a new socket on to neaten it up.
 
Yes, one sensor wire is the way to do it so the card only sees one fan but controls the speed of both via the fourth wire.

I bought that ages ago,It's really good aswell i bought 2 120mm fans to go with it,And my temps had droped from 55c idel down to 34c idel,And when playing games full load was round about 70c and new im lucky if it goes past 44c on full load :) well worth the money:)

Wow great review. I have a BFG 8800GT OC2, and it idles pretty hot, and makes a good din when playing most games. Have you found it to be much quieter with your new heatsink?

After reading your review, I'm seriously thinking about doing this myself. What did you clean the GPU with, and was removing the standard HS easy?

Removing the old cooler was easy. Cleaning was messy but worth the effort. Click the links at the bottom of the review for the products used.

You really cannot hear it, except on the very highest settings. Even then, its not loud.

Take your time, and you should have no probs. :)
 
I've replaced a heatsink on an old graphics card last year quite easily, but didn't need to do much cleaning on it. How did you go about cleaning the GPU, ram and vrms using the ArctiClean solutions? I've never used them before and not that confident on what exactly needs cleaning and how.

Also, do you think modifying the ram sinks are necessary? I notice you said they don't fit perfectly. Taking a hack saw would inevitably end up with me cutting my arm off.

LOL.

Each card is different. Some leave loads of thermal interface material behind, others less so. You can see from the pictures how much was left on my gpu. If you purchase the cleaning kit, it comes with all the solutions necessary and some lint free wipes. I also used some cotton buds dipped in cleaner for the fiddly areas. The ram sinks fit just fine, just remove the supplied sticky tape and fit some better stuff. Alternatively, use some thermal glue. Arctic silver do some, but bear in mind that once its on, it aint ever coming off.

As for what actually needs cleaning, the old heatsink gives you all the info, as the impressions are left in the tape Nvidia use.

I modified the vrm sinks for my own personal taste, and because I had the facilities to do it at work. I am not sure it actually needs them, as the fan on the right blows straight at the vrm`s. You could just stick them on, covering as much as you can, and I am sure it would be fine.
 
That is extremely helpful, thank you very much. I have all 3 items you used in my basket and I think I'm certainly going to indulge in some of these modifications. Although the glue looks like a good alternative, the thermal tape seems a safer bet for me. £25 for an huge reduction in temps and prevention of noise pollution is a no-brainer! :)
