film for testing surround sound

Any action film with awesome gun sequences are always the best option :)
As above Matrix, Saving Private Ryan etc

Neil Young - Harvest, available on DVD Audio, it works with standard DVD players and you'll get a better idea as to what surround should sound like rather than the rest of the "BOOM BOOM" or "BANG BANG" crew have suggested, the sound stage really comes alive with the atmosphere of the barn upon which Harvest was first cobbled together.

Oh, the only use I have ever found for Jean Michelle-Jarre is surround demos, Aero is a great DVD video that really shows off surround audio very well indeed,

You either have the wrong equipment or have it incorrectly set up if that's what you get ;)

(But yes I know what you mean :p)

Might be on my own here, but for surround sound with a lot of atmosphere rather than just bass bass bass, I always use master and commander to check out my system.

Not just you. I've never used it to test, but I can definately appreciate it.

There's a great combination of tones and frequencies, and the nature of the film lends itself really well to surround sound - lots of circling camera angles and different sources of sound.

Good books too, but they don't have the surround sound.

got the system set up and running, bagged a copy of saving private ryan while i was out and will watch that this afternoon followed by band of brothers :D cant wait

So many great films to choose from...(in terms of surround sound at very least..)

Star Wars Episode 1: The pod race is truely fantastic, great sound, deep bass, brilliant sound positioning

Flight of The Phoenix: Plane flying through a sandstorm, this will give you speakers a wonderful test!

Fight Club: Near the beginning, where Ed Norton is in the plane which gets hit, the sudden rush as the cabin depressurises, is truely phenomenal!

Event Horizon: Right at the start, massive bass as the camera approaches the space ship, amazing sound positioning as we see various items (including a ticking watch) floating about inside,

The Fifth Element: When the Diva is singing, whack this up on a decent system and it sounds absolutely amazing!

Terminator 2: Great positional sounds during the future wars scenes, amazingly audio throughout, especially on the DTS track

Pulse: A little known Horror film which near the end features a room full or servers, the bass pressure of these scenes is something quite incredible

One Hour Photo: Some brilliant 'fear register' bass effects that are lovely and subtle, a real test of a decent sub....

A.I. : Again some wonderful subtle and really low bass that only a decent system will produce.

That's probably enough to be going on with, but with a bit more time to think I'm sure I can come up with a lot more.

Not seen it myself but I heard that the Crazy kung fu fighting film has very good surround sound, in particular some scene where they are fighting in the rain.

I can't remember what it is called though.

Something blades, or something. No idea.

Matrix - Lobby Scene
Matrix - Helicopter Rescue
Matrix - Helicopter/Building Crash

These 3 scenes are what I always demo systems with!!... :)

thanks for the suggestions guys, will deffo be watching Band of Brothers and matrix, gonna stop off in town when i pick it up and see if i can find Saving Private Ryan. Is it available on Blu Ray yet btw?

Nope. Pity as it would be one of the must have titles for me.

I suggest LOTR part 2 or 3 (for the Nazgul Scenes).

Band of brothers episode 2 about 2 3rds of the way in (although entire series is good) when they take out the 4 guns breacourt manor i think? its awesome :)
watched it other day when i just got my new headphones (sennheiser 595) still amazing

Just (finally!) started watching BOB myself. Thought that ep was brilliant for showing off surround sound. :D

+1

This is the one I use as well. The sound design is amazing on it and you just can't beat those cannons tearing through the ships. An all round good test for the surround. :D
