What brands are good and any features, safety or otherwise I should look out for?

Really is looking for either a 500mm or 550mm wide one.

Cannon are very good.

I can vouch for that if the takeover of Cannon by the Merloni group hasn't affected the build quality. (Used to sell 'em a few years back.)

Edit: looks like it has according to dmpoole. Ohdearwhatapitynevermind. :(

Don't touch Smeg. We really regret buying ours as it has brokewn so many times and the support is useless.

You really need to decide what you want from your cooker. Do you want a wok burner? Do you use large pans or just lots of small ones? Have you got children?

Personally, I would love an induction hob, but then again, I'd love to be in the Caribbean right now......................................

Hob or oven?

If it's hob and your a big cooker. look at the 5 ring ones. With a central large ring which fits a wok or other large pan.

Another vote for cannon from me.

On a safety note, if you're ina flat you'll need one with a autimatic gas shutoff system. I think it may be unlawful for a CORGI registered installer to fit one without into a flat. That said, mine hasn't got one as it usually means you have to have a lid which looks gash.

Yeah, my parents have just got one of those and it is bloomin' good, you have of course spotted the one disadvantage though!

To answer the OP though, look at the finish of the hob. I had a black powder coat finish on the cooker in my old house, it was far easier to clean than the stainless steel one I have now.

Find a fitter first in your area first and ask them all the important questions. Some fitters will only fit appliances they supply. Dont buy stainless steel, you'll regret it.

I can also vouch for the Cannon range, great quality. Hotpoint/Creda are also excellent for the money

Please please please take my word for it - all these makes are rubbish and especially with gas products you are risking your lives.

I was the Quality Audit Technician for 27 years for Indesit/Creda/Hotpoint/Cannon, Ariston and some Belling.
When Indesit took over the quality went completely down bank and I've actually seen my colleagues shed a tear because of stuff they have sent through the doors.
I have sent products to customers that I know were dangerous and now these products are built in Poland I know 1000% that their quality is not what we had here in Stoke On Trent.
We used to have their cookers in our Labs and they were awful.

It's your choice but I warned you.

dmpoole, what is your professional opinion on "Stoves" equipment? I ask as i have just bought a Stoves double electric oven, and a Stoves 5 burner gas countersunk hob.

I must admit that I have never tested one BUT I do know they are quality because of all the meetings I went to.

Cannon are very good, go for one with a double oven, one of which doubles as a grill. One with a fold down lid will shut off the gas supply when in a closed position.

Expensive but worth it:

Take my word for it - crap.
Virtually every day I would 'Bond' these cookers which was only about 30 a day but all of them would be reworked in the evening and they would sneak them through when I was gone.
If you find one where all the trims, cheeks & hob all fit nicely together then you've found a rareity.
Also they were very prone to oven chipping and I never saw one where it was chip free without being filled with araldite and black paint.

Here you go, have a look through my Cooker Porn and don't buy anything on that list.

That list has every cooker out there does it not?

If one doesn't buy anyone of those, should i start a fire with some wood in my kitchen instead? I would be grateful for some suggestions on a decent 4 ring gas hob with gas grill and gas over below in a single unit no wider than 550mm. :)

There are only Creda, Hotpoint, Indesit, Ariston & Cannon on that list.
Belling can now be trusted because they pulled away from Indesit when they knew the Poles were going to make them.
Bosch & Stoves are also high on the list.
