Q6600 - a bit too hot

Well I have waited for a week for it to settle, more because Ive been too busy than having patience.

Looks like the cooling does work better under stress. I am using IBT which got my CPU into the region of 75,75,70,70 with the last heater.

With the true it isnt going above 60 at full load. (Edit: Passed the IBT test)

I have another fan coming tomorrow though and I might just reseat the cooler as I didnt have any artic 5 last time and I do now.

I remember having great results with smearing it across the chip on my last chip so I might try that again. Or is that not recommended with quads?

Nice temp drop:), and seeing as your running IBT id say temps in p95 would be a fair bit lower, also the second fan may give another few degrees drop, managed 5'c of mine when i added a second fan.

EDIT, I found spreading across the cpu pretty good, seemed better with my cpu being lapped.

Yeah mine is lapped as well, will definately do tomorrow. Just have the annoying task of taking my computer all to bits again. I find I have to take the MB off so I can attach the fans otherwise case gets in the way and is extremely fiddly.

I get that problem as well, the 8 pin cpu power connector on my p5q deluxe is tucked up in behind where my rear TRUE fan is, i normally have to take the top panel of my case and unscrew the psu to get at the cable, this is on a case with a slide out mobo tray (much knuckle skinning ensues if i dont):D will have to get an 8 pin extension cable to try and sort it out.

What would you expect out of a Q6600 on standard heatsink? just got a new rig and want to push it up to 3g or higher but dont want to change the heatsink?

I expect it to be ok. I am running IBT which pushes it to the limits of heat/use so I would expect a normal heatsink would be ok, but i wouldnt go much higher than 3ghz as quads run hot anyway.

All chips are different at the end of the day. You can only try it and see. Just go up in steps. 2.4, 2.8, 3 etc

3 is the general consensus of what you should get without too much problem. I've not seen anyone fail to hit that even on stock. You should probably get in the region of 3.2 if your case has decent airflow. Anything more than that you almost definitely need an aftermarket HSF.

Edit: Note that this is based on expecting your temps to be HIGH at load after the overclock. You're not going to get 3-3.2 off the stock HSF and be getting 50 degrees out of the thing.

mine OC'd to 3.3Ghz max load temp i have seem when running prime95 = 50*C (all cores), idle at about 22 - 28* (each core varies slightly).

got an artic pro 7 freezer cpu cooler.

Well I just resat the heat sink and reapplied the thermal paste with Arctic 5.

Added the other fan taking the hot air away, so one push, one pull.

Temps are about the same, but will have to wait a few days for it to settle.

Should be better when under load tho.

Right I have pushed it back up to 3.4ghz again and done a test with IBT which it passed.

Edit: Tried 9x400 and it booted but failed on IBT.

Looks like the highest I can go on stock Volts is 3.4ghz, which isnt bad seeing as my stock volts are 1.2
