Have I somehow got 2 SSIDs?

Just installed my WRT54GL. I messed the installation up first time round  but then got it sorted out. I called my network "linksys" and set up the passwords etc.

When I fired up the laptop, I noticed there were 2 linksys networks - one secured and one unsecured. I can connect to both. I decided to reset the router and reinstall - but with a different name "new". I now see "new" and "linksys" and can connect to both. Both are on channel 11.

The signal quality of "linksys" is way lower than "new". So, I'm thinking that it is just a coincidence that someone has used the default name and left the network unsecured. However, when I change the channel of "new" to 7, I notice "linksys" drops off the available networks list. When I change back to 11 it reappears

So I then check the DHCP Clients Table ... when I connect to "new" I clearly see my laptop in the list. I then delete that entry in the list and connect to "linksys" and see no entry.

So, perhaps this thing with the names and channels is just a conincidence ... but I'm a bit worried that I've messed up here. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers.

I suspect one of your neighbours is a networking newbie...

I can pick up a number of wireless networks via my routers "site survey" feature, including a couple of default network name ones (one of whom has only just turned on security recently after a couple of years).

switch yours off completely, can you still see SSID linksys?

Yes I can. I should have mentioned that in my first post. Anyway, I've installed Tomato and in Wireless Site Survey I can see the BSSID of "linksys". This is different to the MAC addresses showing for my router in Status Overview ... is this conclusive proof that "linksys" and "new" are different routers?

If you've turned your router off & linksys is still showing then it is obvious one of your neighbours has one :)

wee extra bandwidth ;)

OK, solved this ... connected to "linksys", turned my router off but was still connected to "linksys" ... QED "linksys" is not my connection.
