Why do people spell bought as brought?

For a forum? I don't.

I’m sure you don’t, what worries me is that some of these people don’t understand the basics of our language, yet alone use a spell checker (they wouldn’t understand the word meanings anyway).

That should be "the words' meanings"

Because people can't be bothered to put any effort into spelling things correctly.

That's fine with me; if they can't be bothered to write something properly then I can't be bothered to read it.

I've never understood that argument. If you know how to spell properly and when to use there/their/they're, it's not an effort.

And if that person has learning difficulties/dyslexia/genuine problems with reading/writing, then... they shouldn't be allowed to use forums? Got to love the OCUK Compassion Crew©

Anyone would think this place was home to a bunch of 100% infallible genuises with an IQ of 150+ that looked like the Adonis' of olde. Oh, wait... that's just when they're on internet forums... ;)

Totally agree, really does my head in when people just type any old **** then expect the reader to decode their gibberish. I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to spelling and grammar - i usually read my post about 5 times before a post it.

With regards to the Brought / Bought thing, a friend i grew up with would always say 'I 'brought this from the shop', i asked him why he never said bought, but i just said he'd always said it.... Thinking about it.... he had 'brought' it from the shop.

... Brought .... the more i look at this word, this less it looks like a real word ;)

Hmm yes dyslexia, didn't think about that .... would that mean that 90% of the users on OCUK are dyslexic? Just kidding ;) My Mum teaches dyslexic kids and if done many of the tests and understand how difficult dyslexia must be for people!

I actually have a problem reading, always have done, I find it very difficult to process certain stuff and memory is shot to ****. Maybe thats why i read my posts over and over :p

The one that annoys me is loose and lose.

Lose = you have lost something
Loose = not very tight, i.e my shoe lace is loose.

pretty poor explanation but it gets the point across.

In my experience, people with dyslexia often try harder to spell things properly because they don't want to come across as idiots.
