The Nokia 5800 Express Media (Tube) Thread

I've got this phone, the camera is fine really just don't take pitch black photos and expect crystal clear xenon stuff. :p Medium to full lighted areas are best. I absolutely love the music player on this, I had the 5310xpressmusic and it was good but nothing compared to this one. It does help having good headphones though.

I've not really checked out the other stuff as of yet. Do I have to pay for the satellite navigation? My friend said I would but I wassn't too sure.

You have to pay for voice guided navigation with Nokia maps, you get the option to buy a subscription OTA via the phone when you go to use it.

Still waiting for a decent 3rd party nav client - Tomtom looks unlikely but Garmin XT should have something soon..

Trying to get vodafone to give me a free upgrade on this for my work phone. Only problem is that my contract is only about £20 a month so they are asking £80 for the phone :( Might end up having to forgoe upgrading for a while and stick with my N70 :(

Just a heads up for Orange users - I've been with Orange for 18 months and just got the 5800 for free with 600 mins and unlimited texts for £20/month on an 18 month contract.

Mapping is free, as is seeing where you are and which route to take to somewhere. You have to pay to get turn-by-turn navigation (and things like city guides)

Check http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/main for details and a free one-week trial.

Thank you very much. :) I read the user-guide but couldn't find what I was looking for. First time I've had a phone like this before. And having only an internet connection at college 3 days a week doesn't help either. :p

My headphones have broke now so I have to return them, a whole day without it's glorious music player. :( I put .wav files onto the memory card, boy are they huge. Two coheed and cambria albums and it was 1.1GB. Sound quality is faultless, always pros and cons to things. :)

My phone came today, very nice, I am impressed!

Just ordered a plastic screen protector though as I dont want it getting all marked.

After 24hrs of playing around with it I'm fairly impressed, not much I can fault on it tbh.

Camera is the biggest drawback though, WiFi can be a lil fiddly to get running and the letter "k" is a right pain in the ass to get recognised when doing handwriting lol

Has anyone got msn messenger working on theres?

Whenever I try and sign in it tells me that it's unable to login :(

I'm using Slick for GTalk and MSN, seems to be pretty good - I'm not real sure what that 'IM' in Apps is but I couldn't make it work :(

Tried to get Fring going but I don't think there's a version for the 5800 yet. It just got into some weird crash/restart loop until I turned the phone off and uninstalled it.

Girlfriend just got similar,

Free phone, £25p/m 400 minutes, unlimited data and texts.

It has been a few days with my one. Liking it so far, screen is good quality & resolution, decent built in speakers, supplied earphones sound good. I can’t say much about the camera as I'm coming from a Nokia 6800 so for me it is an improvement. iplayer plays great with wifi but web and walk feels like 56k browsing at the best of times.

Two main niggles for me now is the scroll bar on the right hand side is very fiddly when trying to scroll through video and email messages and the motion sensor. It seems to auto switch portrait to landscape and back a bit too quickly and then it takes the screen about 3 seconds to show again which I feel is too slow.

One question with Opera mini, how do I zoom into a page? With the built in browser, double clicking the screen changed the zoom. Is there anything similar on the Opera?

I have installed:

sms timer - scheduling text messages
SmartGuard - password protect areas of the phone
Opera Mini - nice browsing (with wifi) but flash slows it down sometimes (same with in built browser)
QuickOffice - read only Office documents. (Paid version, you can edit MS office docs)
iPlayer standalone

However, with the latest version of iPlayer, I cannot save videos for later viewing. Reading up, it seems like we will have to wait for the new firmware (not available for UK models yet). Is this the case for anyone else?

I'm using the in built email to access my gmail account. Is there any recommended mail clients for this (gmail smtp)? I would like something like gmail itself where it can show one message at a time in a chain of emails?

Finally, is there any recommended ebook apps? something that can maybe read out loud?

There are a couple of apps out there which will allow you to download BBC iPlayer Ipod content to you PC, quick convert to 5800 optimised, copy it over to the memory card and Bobs your uncle ;)

My contract is up quite soon and I have to say this phone is looking really good altrenative to the much more expensive iphone. One two quick qs:
1) what games does it come bundled with?
2) how often are people having to resort to using the stylus?
