Hi

Im looking for a new gaming and movie HDTV and have narrowed it
down to either the Panasonic 42PZ80 plasma or the Sony 40W4000 LCD.

The TV will pretty much used exclusively for the X360, PS3, Blu-Ray
and DVD.

I can imagine some people saying if you plan on doing any gaming dont get a plasma, but from what
i hear plasma's are very good for screen burn these days and honestly even though i do spend quite a lot of
time gaming sometimes i dont usually spend too long playing the same game so screen burn shouldn't be a problem.

What i do want though is the very very best PQ with all of my HD sources
especially gaming, that being said which one of these TV's would everybody
recommend i buy for the ultimate performance?

I would appreciate any help/advice you could give me.

Thanks

The 42PZ80 will be a lot better. Definitely go for it. I have the 42PX80 (720p, compared to the PZ80's 1080p) and its amazing. Upgraded from a 40" 1080p Samsung LCD and the difference is amazing, especially in SD on Sky. Blu-Rays look amazing as do games on the PS3.

I and almost everyone here will recommend the PZ80.

Get the PZ80 - nearly everyone comments on how much better it is than LCD.

I have the Sony 40W4000 and have found it to be absolutely excellent so if the PZ80's better then it's a no brainer. :)

movies -> plasma

games -> LCD

you choose

NB Plasma suffers from phosphor trails in games -> google it. some people can't see them, you could be lucky; but many can and truly gross when you can.

This is as a result of the decay rate of the green phosphors used in plasma TV.

However:
- It only affects about 5% of users and then only under certain conditions.
- It only really affects plasmas during their run in period of abround 200 hours.
- If you set up your screen correctly using lower contrast and brightness than is found on the screens out of the box, and much lower than is used in stores for display purposes then you should never see it.

One thing about the PZ80, it's not as clear as LCDs in that you can see dithering from around a foot away....maybe I just didn't notice that on my LCD and perhaps when I view our 720p Kuro it's either not as apparent or I'm being accidentally biased....

Why would you be watching a 42" from a foot away anyway? does it really matter?

Nope :D Would be nicer if it looked a little better at 3-4ft for gaming but it's hardly that noticable.

But at normal viewing distance you can still tell it apart from a Kuro. But that's a) obvious and b) irrelevant :D

Just received a 42PZ80 myself and whilst it looks fantastic, I seem to notice phospor trails when gaming. I'll give you a prime example of when it is most noticeable. When loading COD4, the activision logo comes on and starts spinning and a greenish hue/trail happens . This is a prime example as its black vs white in high motion. The problem is that now I notice it, I seem to notice it more and more. Is there any way to reduce this effect and will it decrease as the set is run in more?

Cheers,

Blue

hehe I did warn you, I too see them quite clearly. for your sake, hopefully what DoD is saying will happen.

I am just glad I like to game on PC more than console, will see if Kuro is as bad, I am awaiting delivery

Yeah, I haven't really got an idea of how bad it is yet as I have only Played COD4 and GTA4 on the Plasma, I have my LCD upstairs anyway, so it's not that big an issue. It seems to be motion related against dark/bright colors. I'm going to tinker more with it tonight.
